Fab vRS - subtly safety-modded at the factory!

Featured Replies

Having gotten into trying to shim the rear axle (rained-out yesterday), I've noted an interesting difference between the vRS and non-vRS rear axle specs:

The Fabia vrS has more toe-in than the non-vRS one. Apart from "uprated bushes" and the toe settings - they seem to be identical (?!).

More toe = more understeer + better straightline tracking= less legal problems for Skoda but = less sporty driving!

Seems Jason had it right in modding a non-vRS Fabia - he has one definite advantage built-in in the handling department from the outset.....

Specs: Rear Axle track: vRS 26' +/- 10', non-vRS 20' +/-10' both sides within 30' of each other. Pull to the Left built-in (!!!).....

top investigating as usuall bas,can you fix it?

So the rear beam is identical between normal and vRS models??? Good god......explains a few things, namely the stupid understeer with the heavy vRS lump up front.

Just checked on VagCat....there's 3 parts listed for rear axles:

1 6Q0500051AG

rear axle beam / for models without power steering

/ AZF,AME,ATZ, AUA,AUB,AZL, ASY,ATD,AQW, AWY,BBY,BBZ PR-0N1

(1) 6Q0500051AK

rear axle beam / for models with power steering

/ PR-0N2

(1) 6Q0500051AM

rear axle beam

/ PR-0N7

Which one is the vRS one? I imagine one out of the latter 2?

the PR-ON is the code for the sports suspension, the parts are different though, the later one being the revised beam for 05+ cars. Dont know what they revised though.

Its funny you should say toe in as my vrs has alot of toe in on the rear beam and different cambers on either sides :(

Will be able to tell you more once ive visited a proper alignment place.... namely awesome ;)

But i also have a theory on the jabba bars bending the rear axles. Think about it logically and you will see the answer. Ie do you think the stub axel was designed to have alot of sideways force and the twice the design weight acting on it? ( assuming one wheel is off the ground when sliding sideways)

adding a rear ARB puts no more stress on stub axles/beams/wish bones and if i am thinking it through right should infact lower the forces acting upon it as it is sharing teh force between both side's at all times.

and how the hell would you get sideways forces????

The 2 differences seem to be: MORE toe-in on the vRS plus more solid bushes (the regular powerflex ones are more solid/better than the vRS ones).

I hope to prove that you CAN TRULY align the rear axle, hopefully within a couple of days.

I have on hand some US-made universal plastic shims that are TUV certified. They allow you to adjust both toe and camber at the same time by +/- 1.50 degrees in small increments.

Was going to do them yesterday but it rained...

Aiming for minimal toe-in, equal on both sides as well as equal maximal spec camber...

This should minimise understeer without provoking oversteer or loss of straight-line tracking...

Will post up the results when I get it done. Assuming this works (and the shims are universal - all VW cars including the Polo, all the SEAT's) it'll be a cheap fix - about 8 quid a shim.....

Cheers

i vote bas king of the modders:thumbup:

So when the car lifts on the to 3 wheels, there will be more force on the wheel which is on the black stuff.

Sideways forces when the car is sliding sideways :D

I too vote bas king of modders.

Ill be kind of the bodgers

its the way you tackle every job yourself, and even after people say there is no off the shelf solution, you go and engineer one, long live the king of PIKEY modds:thumbup:

that better?:D

Pikey king - just saw a prog on Fashion for young Gypsy girls in Greece - that title may carry some perks:rofl:

Currently raining cats and dogs here in Bahrain - guess George brought it along with him. Will have to sort out an unoccupied garage tmrw - need to get this thing done and photographed......

Thanks for the support (I'll be sure to wear it, :D)

I vote Bas king of speaking in tongues... Where can I buy a modders dictionary?

just use the search, this will sort the confusion:thumbup:
