Norton successfully removed , its like a new computer now , so much quicker :D

running AVG free

My Norton subscription runs out next week on the new desktop. If I remove it using the tool mentioned in a previous post and replace it with, say, AVG what should I do about 'Windows Defender'? Is it ok just to leave it installed and running?

Thanks

Yes, no probs - we do it on our home PC (Vista). AVG is anti-virus, Defender anti-spyware so they should live happily side by side.

We encountered a problem the other day: Win Service center suddenly persisted in telling us that both the AV and Defender was disabled and it was impossible to re-enable them. By googling we found a solution that worked for us, might be worth noting:

Windows Security Center does not identify AntiVirus - Microsoft Windows Vista Community Forums - Vistaheads

Defender is MS own brand (they bought out a company called Giant) anti-spyware.

It's a bit poop. I don't use it myself. There have been a few publicised stories of how some adware companies have paid Ms to be taken off the defender 'bad list' so that now they get left on to do their evil stuff.

It's best to look at an independent product. Lavasoft's Adaware is quite good. A-squared have a paid for product that is good. You can use the free trial to clean things up and the free limited function version you get left with is ok too.

I use Adaware + Spyware Blaster.

Blaster is more like a vaccination. It stops things getting on the PC in the first place but don't remove anything.

TBH if you avoid downloading silly little gimmicks and games and use Firefox or Opera instead of IE you'll have very few problems.
