Do I keep Norton anti-virus or not ?

Featured Replies

my subscription to Norton anti-virus is going to be renewed on the 22nd of Jan , do i keep it , never had a problem on the computer , so assume its working ok

or do i get rid of it , the computer is unbelievably slow starting up because Norton scans everything on start-up , don't know why and couldn't find any way of disabling this function,

i have now resorted to just hibernating the computer to save the time of sitting there waiting for Norton to do its thing

if i do get rid , what do i use instead ? already running Zone alarm, AVG Ad-watch and Ad-Aware

i've heard good things about AVG anti-virus , has anybody any other thoughts ?

oh and its got to be cheaper than Norton

bin it Ric, it's a resource hungry pig.

much better to use something like AVG Free, or Avast (I use Avast) or PC Tools free antivirus edition, then use the windows firewall or one of the other freebies.

for home use, I can't see any real reason to actually purchase av software whilst these free editions exist :)

sometimes norton can be a pig to remove, there is a removal utility on the symantec site to get rid of it.

absolutley right... norton really takes up your computers capacity.... AVG is a small (free) program, that works in a much better way... you can get it here grisoft.com

I bought norton for my new lap top and my brother told me I should have saved £30 and downloaded AVG.

Will remember that for next year then.

I have used Norton on 3 PCs for years but abandoned it last year in favour of the free version of AVG. I have no regrets. :)

Norton = suck

Big time.

My Mcafee runs out next week and I have already removed it

I'm running the AVG stuff along with Spybot SD

i'm running norton & AVG on laptop at moment... ;)

This is fate, got the message that my free Norton Antivirus was due for renewal on 21 Jan. Tried to renew yesterday but it wouldn't accept my card  so left it to go to work.

Came in this morning & saw this thread.:D

have now downloaded AVG & dumped Norton,;)

A big thanks to ric04vrs for the thread & Thanks for the advice all of you.

Did you use the uninstall tool that I linked to completely get shot of norton ???

AVG Rules:thumbup:

so Norton is actually an Anti-virus....strange. Everytime I have to repair a laptop damaged by worms or spyware, it happens to be running the pesky thing

Well I'll mention NOD32 by Eset. Its absolutely first class, and if you do a search on here for NOD32 you will see nothing but praise. It uses tiny resources, and is proven to be the strongest antivirus of the bunch. Its not free, but you can run a 30 day trial, and if you like it 2 year subscription is less than 1 year with Norton... ;)

My employer has now ditched Norton (which says a lot as there was a big buy in to it a few years back). I use Avast at home and it seems to work well (aside from the stupid voice which states "Virus definitions updated" in the middle of the night and scares the hell out of me  )

Chris

Personally I don't bother with anything or than the hardware firewalls in the routers. I've trained the kids and swmbo not to do anything stupid when online and we never have any problems. .............................Goes of to touch the biggest tree i can find

And where would they have come in from ????

any where mate port and IP address scanning normally work.

Only way your totally safe not running Anti Virus is if your using a mac/linux or anything not windows really at this moment in time anyway

I did a fresh reinstall on a mates computer.

Hooked it up to the www downloaded and installed spyware scanner and antivirus scanner.

Only went to known websites in the unprotected state before protecting it.

On running them both after the install, found both spyware and viruses on it.

Shocking.

Even round a hardware firewalll??

I don't do any on line banking and I run housecall every so often never turns anything up so I ain't that bothered and to be honest they can have the rest of the 5hite thats on there

This is a fatal error that some users make, in thinking that 2 AV products are better than one. In fact the opposite is true, running 2 AV products leads to conflicts and file locks when checking files. Not only does this slow your computer down, but it will also mean a virus can get through if both programs try and access the file at the same time. Having worked on several home computers, where this has happened and they have been riddled with viruses, I would advise uninstalling at least one of them.
