Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Featured Replies

and i say again BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to sky :(

I have sat in front of me a 1080p LCD telly, an amp with optical inputs and will output dolby digital and Sky HD that will also pass through a dolby digital signal.

so anyway, the Sky is connected to the TV through HDMi and the telly has an optical out that is set to dobly digital

the optical is plugged into the amp yet only gets a prologic signal and why i hear you ask??

because the lazy sods at Sky only ouput dolby digital over the optical output rather than over both the digital outputs

why oh why do they have to be so stupid?? bang goes my plan to get an exbox elite and plug it into the telly with an HDMi, SkyHD through HDMi, PS3 through HDMi and let the optical output of the TV go to the amp so i don't need to keep turning the amp over.

:(

poop.

Get a new amp then you numpty.

its not the amp you numpty, the amp recieves a dolby digital signal fine its that the SkyHD doesn't output dolby digital over HDMi, only over optical.

2 into 1 optical connector ?

probably talking cr@p i know

I guess they still expect people to want to output pictures direct to a TV and audio direct to an amp :D Are there any aftermarket Sky HD boxes that do what you want, or are they all the same spec? A quick Google suggested that the only difference is the number of optical outs and none support DD over HDMI....

Chris

Did that go totally over any one elses head???????? lol

Hope you can fix it.

Cheers

Without wanting to be too direct...

What a bunch of f**kwits.

Whoever made that decision and whichever firmware guys programmed it should be taken outside and shot, twice.:thumbdwn:

Why not have the option to output it to HDMI or/and optical... it just makes no sense to not output the DD through the HDMI... weirdos!

Looks like you'll have to switch the amp over when you switch between sky and ps3 then unfortunately!!

YES

Yeah have to switch my amp over between SkyHD & my 360 as well, its not to bad I've just got into the habit now switch 360 on, switch amp over.

erm, I thought HDMI was just for video ? Didn't think it support audio at all.

Me too, but a bit of research suggests it can support 8 audio channels as well! I guess very few TV's implemented it so the decision was taken not to include it. After all, all the home cinema/hifi buffs would want the sound to go direct to the amp rather than going through another system and potentially degrading the signal....

Is it really difficult to press the input button on your amp, lazy ****. :P

Means I either have to find the remote or get up off the bean bag to reach the button on the front of it. :D

it's not difficult, it's just a pain in the **** :thumbdwn: and is it's all digital all the way, there shouldn't be any loss in quality ()

a new amp with HDMI inputs could work around the problem, so long as you can pair up an optical and an HDMI input for Sky so that you switch over the amp instead of the TV

yeah its not that we are lazy but its the fact that you keep forgetting to switch things over and visitors get confused.

we recently had a friend stay over and he slept in the living room, he got up maybe 45mins before us but sat in the room without the tv on as he could work it all out :D

sky on, tv on , amp on then switch everything to right channel

why can't they do auto switching over HDMi and sky send the DD over HDMi so simply turning the TV over sets everything how it should be? :(

You need a remote that can do macro programming ;)

You need a remote that can do macro programming ;)

I was just thinking that. I have an aging but extremely versatile Philips Pronto which would solve all your problems but its not for sale.:P

Might be able to offer a solution but I have a couple of questions, what is the make and model of the amp and do you have a pic of the rear showing the various input and output sockets.

Secondly, if you want a really good remote that controls everything then look no further than a Harmony Remote (now owned by Logitech), it'll take a bit of setting up but once done it's fab  May be a bit priceyfor some, but imo it's one of the best gadgets I've ever bought. :)

Yes, it's a remote control :D

its not a top class amp, its a pioneer one from maybe 4 or 5 years ago but it works well enough for me right now. we are planning on getting a new amp in the near-ish future that has multiple HDMi inputs and can pass through 1080p :)

the amp only has a few inputs, 2 x opticals, 1 x co-axial and some rca's and can pass through video but only via phono :(

what the thread was really about is the fact that Sky are too stoopid to stick DD up both the HDMi as well as the optical and make no mention of it anywhere in the menu :(

the answer is going to be buy an amp where we can link an optical input to an HDMi input and plug both into the amp from sky and let the telly pass through the audio from things like xbox and PS3(in the future).

How many TV's cater for audio over HDMI.... not many to my knowlegde.

How many TV's cater for audio over HDMI.... not many to my knowlegde.

ours does, as do my mate's, so at the moment I'd say "recent" TVs cater for audio over HDMI :D

It's part of the spec, so anything that complies to the HDMI spec will :)

Oh.......really ????Mmy 6month old philips 37" LCD says it's HDMI, but doesn't support audio over HDMI
