Octavia VRS- Misfiring

Featured Replies

Hiya- I'm hoping someone can help. I have a 51 reg VRS & my engine management light has just come on. The car has also been misfiring prior to the light coming on. I have rang Skoda who have said it is safe to drive as long as the light doesnt flicker & it is going on a diagnostic on Monday.... any1 got any ideas what it could be, my boy'f thinks it might be the ignition coils?? I'm worrying that this is gonna cost me a small fortune!!!

Welcome!

Yes sound like a failed coil pack?

They will cost anywhere from £30-£50 each but then the dealer will probably charge you to do a diagnostic and then fit it.

Mmm agree with the above

Maybe worth checking out spark plugs at the same time

Sarah

or possibly injectors, EGR valve or ECU?

Thats based on all the things they tried on my old ST before I got rid...

St`s common faults are not the same as a vRS

The vRS has coil packs on them that featured on Watchdog they was so bad

So it is possibly better to go down the route of a common fault than on an injector that vRS`s dont have that much problem with

That is why they ask on a Skoda forum as people know common faults

That's great thanks, when you say £30-50 each... how many would i need (sorry if that's a numb question!

Only easy if you know

4 my dear

I would replace all 4

@ approx £29 each + VAT well worth it

Dont forget how much it will cost you for diagnostic too

May be worth seeing if there is anyone with VAGCOM who could help if they are local

Sarah

I would go for coil packs from gsf which are Bremi ones (the original vrs ones are Bremi).

My total inc free p&p £64.16 for 4 coils.

Oooh good price :D

When you think that dealers could charge up to £90 + VAT ish to check , makes you wonder if it is worth just replacing them anyway and see how you go?

Just a thought

:eek::eek:Not safe at all!!!!!

If the engine is misfiring you mustn't drive it unless absolutely necessary!! Otherwise you could ruin the cat with the un-burnt fuel!

Quote from Page 111 of the Octavia Owner's Manual:

If misfiring, a loss of power and rough running occur when driving, this may be caused by a fault in the ignition system. In this case, uncombusted fuel can get into the exhaust system and thus pass into the atmosphere. In addition, the catalytic converter may be damaged as a result of overheating. Reduce your speed immediately and have the fault rectified at the nearest Skoda dealer.

How much software programming would it take to turn the affected cylinders fuel injector off to save the catalyst?

Wouldn't a cylinder without fuel going to it overheat and cause problems.I would get a new coil promptly.

Very good price but arent there any uprated coil packs available? Surely by going back to these original parts then you will haved all the same problems again? Mind you it hasnt stopped me ordering 4 just to leave in the glovebox;)

Darren

The original H version iirc caused a lot of problems and they have been revised many times since. We are now on revision- R.

Quite the reverse. Cars have been designed to run on "only some" cylinders, for economy and/or engine temperature reasons, such as last years McLaren F1 cars. Also excess fuel acts as a coolant, albiet with a risk of bore washing, and excess engine wear.

Could you give me the part number for these on the GSF website just to make sure i order the right ones .Just had no. 4 replaced and 4 new sparks but engine management is still on and i was told i should replace all 4 . Think i will do the other three myself .

Cheers

GSF do 2 different ones.

If they are anything like my local GSF they will tell you that yea they can get the cheap ones but not to bother with them.

So just ask for the OEM ones and thats what you should get

Gsf part number 92530 for the vrs.

Original Bremi coil packs.
