What order of upgrade?

Featured Replies

As a new owner of vRS (and I daresay others in the same boat do likewise), I am ploughing through threads to gain as much knowledge as possible about the car with a view to mods as and when they can be afforded (I'm speaking of remap, air, filter, exhaust, etc), and possible benefits and drawbacks of each.

For the more experienced (dare I say wiser ) who have already been down this road, what order whould you recommend modifications to be undertaken for each to have maximun benefit at the time of fitting?

Thanks.

It depends how far you want to go but a free flowing exhaust system, air filter and remap in that order will give you substantial gains. A bit further and your looking at a front mounted intercooler and boost controller also but this is where it gets pricey. Finally a big turbo upgrade for insane power. Its also best to have any performance parts fitted BEFORE the remap.

The best modification for the money in terms of handling is fitting a rear anti roll bar also.

Also dont forget to uprate the dump valve as the standard units are not very strong.

I had a remap done first, which takes it to around 205 BHP,the difference is amazing, like what the car maybe should have been.I changed the air filter for a green panel filter and changed the dump v/v to a forge 007 at the same time as the remap.Recently i changed the exhaust to a turbo back system and thats all i have done.Had it dyno'd yesterday 228Bhp..well happy.

If you have what is being called a generic remap you could have that first or last it doesn't matter.

If your going for a full custom one, you need to have it last to make use of all the mods better.

what about the APR Stage II at Awesome?

Thanks for the replies.

I was originally thinking of having a remap done at the same time as having cambelt/water pump etc changed, but then it occured to me that if I change both the air in and out, then surely that will have some effect on the map work.

I'm limited in outlay at present, so was thinking about cam belt, air filter, dump valve and exhaust - def cat back, mebbe turbo back - in for a penny, in for (a few hundred !) pounds.

This will take me up my limit cash wise until the summer, when I will have the cash for a remap.

Or, as Babs points out, just whack it all on the credit card, and get everything changed/set up at the same time by Awesome. And take months paying it off  when other "wearing out" parts may require replacing anyway.

So many choices and so little money :D

Star are closer to you, and quite popular with the other Scottish members too (even if they don't have AwesomeSarah).

£1750+VAT-Briskoda disount... :)

It's not bad!

brakes first, performance second

I would improve handling before performance as well:O

  • 1 month later...

I own a 51 plate vrs and i would agree with all the above first get a air filter then a full decated exhaust and then go and talk to the lads at Collins Performance they will remap your motor spot on mine is running 240bhp and i love it!!!:D

I've done the panel filter, dv + remap.... with a stage 1 APR remap. Have around 200bhp and 231lb/ft now.

I will probably do the 100cel cat and cat back with stage 2 apr before the end of the year... even though I said I wouldn't :D

Yep that's the route im taking! ;)

yup forget performance mods first IMO

get some decent rubber on if you havent already

rear ARB ive got a Whiteline bar on mine other have a Neuspeed one

DS2500 pads on the front

That as a start will transform the car no end and will make it even better once you start adding power mods to it

I like the look of this thread, i have an 02 white octavia vrs that im toying with getting it modded. My Civic Type R i had previousley was mental and have really knoticed a difference in performace between it and the octavia. The octavia especially on overtaking at high speed tends to want a bit more encouragement to get past, so a few minor mods to get the BHP up could be well in order.

I totaly agree with the break pads, I had DS2500 on my Civic with Black diamon grooved disks, and once warmed up they were brilliant, did seem to be constantly cleaning the break dust off the alloys though ;-).

If i were to upgrade the exhaust, so meany people have opinions on this bit, im getting confused a bit, if you put a cat bypass kit in, does this give you an mot problem? and make it megga loud? Do you loose mush from say just having a cat back system? Also what systems give the best perfomace with minimal noise? i dont mind a bit of beefy exhaust noise, i just dont want anything that will drone every ware i go.

Sambo, yes decatted exhausts will fail the mot, best to go for 100/200cel cat...my black Octy is decatted and with the GT2871rs turbo is very loud:D The red one runs a custom made 100cel cat/downpipe, straight through middle section (have removed Milltek resonated) to a Milltek rear box with twin pipes..i must say the sound is cool not to loud but a nice rumble when booting:cool:

Milltek are quality exhausts however they can be a pig to fit over the axle, Blueflame are also popular on here and are slightly cheaper:)

Scathel, if you can afford it, try to do filter, turbo intake, exhaust before "custom" remapping, if you can stretch to it get a FMIC and DV, the DV you may be advised to change when remapped

Would you say definning the air box is worth it?

Also what sort of different do the dog bone + bushes make and at what cost / labour?

Thanks for that mate, im just buying a house so once all the papper work is sorted and the house is let, money will be back on to do some playing

Yes it is worth it, just have to watch out for water getting to the MAF. Contrary to popular belief, water kills MAF's not so much oil.

Dog bone to stop excessive engine movement = less ASR interference.

Bushes stiffens up suspension and steering feel.

Price depends on who you go to, give one of our sponsers a call.

With a new car the first mods i make are fag packets and burger wrappers on the floor followed by a big chunk out of one of the alloys!

really makes it my own.
