Another Stricken Skoda

Featured Replies

Yesterday night I posted on the gearbox oil thread

I think mine needs checking or the gearbox may be failing as its been hard engaging first at times today.

Will have to check the clutch too"

Today I have been out to my car, fired it it up to find it will not engage into gear at all.

It will when the engine is off though.

I spoke to my mechanic and he thinks the clutch cable might need adjusting, right now it will not move and will be towed tomorrow. Luckily its sat on my driveway and not on a roadside.

I'm hoping it is the cable.

Could the clutch have gone?

I didnt hear anything snap or go bang yesterday.

On the 1.3 the clutch cable adjuster is easily visible above the transmission housing. It's sort of 2 or 3 nuts with like an anti-rattle piece of metal. No idea on the 1.6 though.

If the cable had snapped I would expect the clutch pedal to be much softer. Sounds like it could be something needing adjustment or clutch release mechanism. You should normally be able to select all gears without putting the clutch down so long as the car isn't rolling a little and resting on the clutch. As you *can* select gears without the engine running that would seem to rule out the gear linkage.

I'll give it a check tomorrow. I'll stick it into gear and give it a push.

The clutch pedal "feels" normal but its not engaging the gear and just lets it crunch if I try.

My mechanics going to examine it tomorrow I think, but its going to need towing if it needs to go up on ramps.

Im sorry to hear your cars not working. Sounds like its something to do with the clutch if it works when the engine is off. Good luck in getting it sorted.

99% certain that's clutch cable adjustment gone horribly wrong. If you can get the car on the road and start driving (put it in first gear while stationary then start her up) you'll probably still be able to get into second and third gears, which will prove the point. But personally I'd just put a few turns on the clutch cable adjuster and see what happens. You need two 10mm spanners and a pair of everyday pliers, and finding the tools in your shed will take a lot longer than making the adjustment!

sometimes, if it wont go into first, try pushing the gear stick towards first and slowly lifting the clutch. this may let the gears engage.

My mechanics examined it and the cars been taken away.

He says its adjusted fine and the cable is OK but the plate isnt releasing like it should.

If that can get fixed then all OK otherwise its going to need a new clutch.

Ordered a new clutch from my local dealer comes in 3 parts.

But cause i'm working on an early shift for the next 4 days I have had to hire a car.

What have I hired you ask?

well for £93 pounds and hired from today till Wed morning I have a Chevrolet Matiz 57 reg with just over 8000 miles.

Will have to see what engine is in there but the only decent thing is the Blaupunkt CD player.

What I hate - The speedo placement, controls, quality of the switchgear.

:weeping:

The sooner I get my Felly back the better.

bugger. i'm lucky, i managed to borrow one of the works vans. you know, the really old one that no one wants to take home any more.

More Matiz woes

It leans too much, tyre noise on motorway etc etc

I'd prob buy a CityRover over this. I seriously hate the Matiz and think you'd have to be daft to purchase one when a small Micra like my sisters on an M Plate is much better, cheaper and feels better to drive.

I literally am counting the days and will be in heaven when this car goes back and I'm back at my Skodas helm.

Chevrolet Matiz :thumbdwn:

Skoda Felicia  Should be good to drive with a new clutch and will go on for another 100k miles with ease.

Just cheap Korean junk with a well recognised American badge on the front isn't it? (No disrespect to Korea :) )

Good job you're not disrespecting Korea. Kim Jong Ir would be most displeased and may call on Arec Barrwin of the FAG :rofl::rofl:

Well, the Matiz has its market. My sister owns one and finds it the perfect car, because:

She and her husband hardly ever need a car, they go almost everywhere by bike but make just enough awkward journeys in a year to warrant keeping something with 4 wheels and an engine;

Neither of them drives briskly under any circumstances ever;

It's got enough room for two and a semi-dismantled bike plus some shopping;

It's very cheap to buy and run, and (so far!) reliable.

In other words, it's a car that sells to exactly the sort of people who wouldn't generally be visiting a car enthusiast chat forum! :)

Point taken.

I wasn't complaining about it's performance which isn't too bad to be honest.

I guess its just not my type of car.

Daiwoo Matiz - pointless city car for tiny people. Reasoning - I was given a lift in one by a female friend, and my one shoulder was up against the passenger door window, and the other was rubbing against hers (not that that was a bad thing in itself).

  • Author

Depends what you were rubbing ;)

And if she said ooh the gear change is a bit stiff today :rofl:

Shoulders; we're just friends (or close friends if travelling in her roller skate).

Just ordered a new clutch cable too.

I'm actually beginning to smile again as my Felly will have a new clutch, cable, gearbox oil and will be just a delight to drive again.

Only have this Matiz until Wednesday now, I'd definately say thats worth grinning about in itself!!

I'll bet... "I have a really big, long, wide...... ....... Skoda" wins the women over every time

It sure does. Then they say Czech this out and show me some Vorsprung Durch Technique

Parts were a reasonable price too. My mechanic said he could get a clutch and cable for £109

My local dealer Parkside? in total under £77

The cars stuck on his ramps so he needs the parts sooner rather than later. Which is fine with me :D

No, but asking them just what the BMW driver might be compensating for usually does! :orb_devil

Not quite so stricken now. :D My Skoda moves again!!!

The new clutch is a little stuff and needs running in.

Gear oil was changed and it shifts smooth.

£220 in total.

Need to give the wipers a good clean now though or replace them.

There was a guy with a Seat Ibiza 1.4 who came in and said he was having clutch issues.

Seems to be time of the month

Thers now an odd clunk sound coming from engine.

I'll jkeep an eye on it for the time being.

Turn the volume up. Sorted! :D

I've got the same thing after my clutch was changed. On the basis that they put the top gearbox mount on upside down, I'm going to be looking at the bottom mounts in the near future.

Success on the movement tho :o

Don't forget to check the bonnet prop for sounds :) congrats on being on the road again
