Strange Noise

Featured Replies

Hi all, wonder if you could help me with a strange but noticable noise on my Mk1 vRS?

As i pull away i get a noise that i can only describe as sounding similar to air blowing down a metal pipe or a low growl/grinding. This sound happens when i change gear and accelerate again or rev the carand is very pronounced in an enclosed space. I have also noticed that the dump valve is now making a prominent pssst when changing gear.

VAG com has no error codes listed but it does feel down on boost.

Any ideas?

Sounds like an air leak.Take the engine cover off check hoses to the dv and the n75 valve. There is a possibility the dv diaphram is knackered too.

Is it the original black plastic dv?

might be the hose that runs from the turbo down inside the drivers side wing inner, sound's similar to the problem i had, hose was loose and rubbing

Thanks both, I had a suspicion that it was possibly an air leak or a problem between the turbo and intercooler. It is the original black plastic (Bosch i think) DV. I'm hoping it is that then i can tell the misses and put my hand in my pocket for a nice Forge unit :D.

I have contacted my local Dealer and have it booked in for next weekend.....just hoping i dont get the old 'sucking teeth' "thats gonna cost ya" !!!

let us know will ya.

Just an addition to my problem really....maybe a help. I got bored this afternoon so i got my laptop out and connected it to my vRS. It has 2 faults logged but no EML -

I think one was 17705 (possibly)...boost leak check D.V.

The other i can't remember but it was saying that the car was running rich ( and i thought that was my heavy right foot causing low MPG). (Note to self...write the damn codes down...better still copy & paste).

Still have my fingers crossed on the D.V. (have spoke nicely to Sarah at Awsome to quote me on a Forge) :).

Will let you know on any further developments.

Sounds more like an air leak than a DV to me.

Got the same problem on mine...the infamous 17705 PRESSURE LOSS fault and also 17545 BANK 1 LONG TERM FUEL TRIM TOO RICH, but the car runs fine.:confused:

Other than the engine management light coming on for about 10 days then going off for a similar period there is nothing wrong with it. Mechanic thinks the second fault may have been caused by the first...it is just soooooo annoying :mad: !!!!!

The intercooler to turbo pipe has been replaced, and I can't see/hear any leaking air pipes anywhere. Any suggestions :confused:

Hi folks,

Took my car to Skoda. They diagnosed a leaking DV. Leaking under boost apparantly.

Luckily, i'd had a chat with Sarah at Awsome GTI and purchased a Forge 007p. Replacing it took me about 10 mins. Car runs better now, and there seems more power too. Hopefully thats a fix then. Fingers crossed.

Nice one.

Cheers for update

Cheers for that; are we talking about an air leak from the DV, rather than a weak spring leading to a loss of boost pressure?

Sorry i haven't replied. Been workin.

Right, the dump valve had a vacuum leak. i.e not holding the piston up with my thumb over the vacuum pipe.

Now the bad news....my fault is back :thumbdwn: same noise as before damn...back to the drawing board i think. Only good news is it's now intermittant, so probably won't happen when i take the car to Skoda and they'll look at me like i'm an idiot :(

Not so good.

When that happened to me i replaced the lower pressure hose for the new one with the revised seal.

Hi Johnny, thanks for your help, it is appreciated. I'm located in Staffordshire. by Stafford to be exact). Don't know how local that is to you?

Only about 270 miles ! :D

A clue in the bit that says "Location: Port Seton" then? ;)

The strange noise saga continues.

Episode III Revenge of the Turbo.

Well, i did some investigation and i think the dump valve is dumping air when it shouldn't....i.e under partial throttle and the sound i can hear is the air recirculating possibly. I also sometimes get a jolt from the car like taking my foot off the accelerator quickly and i hear it dump air (a whoosh from dehind the passenger side of the dash) this is also accompanied at times by the 'strange noise' which does sound like air traveling through a metal pipe/induction noise.

Any ideas folks?

Problem with your dump valve. It's not unknown for them to dump boost early as an initial failure mode.

Hi Ken, thanks for your reply. I have replaced the dump valve with a forge unit last week as i too thought that was the problem. Unfortunatly the problem persists.

Could it be the valve that controls the DV...N249 if my memory servers me correctly?

mine does this sometimes too. and ive replaced the DV with a forge unit.

i got under my car at the weekend and had a poke about looking for a split hose.

i just wanted to clear something up with what hose is what and where they are so if someone could check this it would be very useful.

ok as far i know the air route goes:

1. Air box

2. Intake hose

3. Turbo intake pipe (TIP)

4. Compressor end of Turbo

5. Steel pipe coming straight off exit of compressor housing and going across the back of the engine bay

6. Rubber hose through wing to funny squashed short metal pipe

7. Short squashed metal pipe in wing

8. rubber hose from short squashed pipe to intercooler

9. Intercooler

10. Hose from intercooler to throttle body

Is that it??

Or is there a hose from the turbo outlet to that long steel pipe?

Item 6 that i noted, seemed to be covered in oil and looked very tatty. Also had a heat shield bag over it so i couldnt see if it was split.

Is this the hose that has been revised?

Part numbers would be handy too, so i can price up changing all the intake hoses in one go, and rule them out once and for all.

I count 4 hoses........ please correct me if ive missed one out guys.

Thanks.

It might be a good idea to check the hoses leading to and from the N249.

I think two other members have this trouble at the moment Ethos and angry dog.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I've read both Ethos and Angry Dogs posts with interest and also posts on hesitation as i'm getting that and i'm hearing it dump air at about 1800RPM on part throttle.

Is the N249 valve one of those under the black metal panel thats just in front of the intake manifold?
