Strange Noise

Well, an update.

I've gotten rid of my spluttering and hesitation/surging....here's what i did.

1. Changed Turbo pipe between flat pipe in wheel arch and turbo. Called a charge pressure pipe i think. Mine was the older A revision. Changed it to a C revision.

2. Cleaned throttle body and did a re-alignment.

3. Changed all 4 coil packs.

Been ok for a week. No hesitation.

Was gonna do BHP check with VAG Com in 3rd gear. Only managed to check to 4000RPM as some bird in a mini decided that she'd pull out on me whilst i was doing ermmm cough speed......good news is the brakes work . Still got 150BHP at 4000RPM. Don't know if thats ok or not.

Bad news is that f**king noise is still there..grrrrrrr.

little update from me,

I fitted the N249 valve today (tricky git that was!!),

After reading the vagcom guide for the throttle body reset, I realised when I fitted my stereo equipment a few weeks back I disconnected the battery for some time and so should have undertaken a TB reset (oopsy!). So did this (after giving the TB a full clean)

Took car out for a run, immediately car felt smoother, throttle was more responsive and less 'jerky' - thought I would give a bit of stick, as soon as I did the card shuddered and the CEL flashed a few times. Immediately pulled across and checked VAGCOM - 2 new codes were listed :(

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

P0300 - 35-00 - -

16688 - Cylinder 4: Misfire Detected

P0304 - 35-00 - -

Needless to say, although it didn't misfire at all on the way back I didn't give the car any 'stick' to test the hesitation.

So I've order 4 new coil packs, and will fit these and new spark plugs this week and hopefully report back with a full test ;)

Hi,

That's very similar to what i had.

Did a TB alignment, went for a test drive/thrash and got the same codes but on cylinders 1 and 3.

Replaced coil packs and all is well....i hope.

May plug in VAG COM later to see if i have any more recuring codes.

Right - fitted new plugs and coil packs last night. Did the 22 miles drive to work this morning, drove normally, irratic (blipping throttle etc) and a couple of full WOT giving it some beans.

So far no hesitation, boost drops etc. and no 17705 yet! :)

Looking good.

nice nice! sounds good so far then....

Excellent !

Sounds like you're well on your way then. :)

Hope so :) - thing is I know others have replaced bits, and it's been fine for a few days and it reverts back to driving like crap :(

So will give it a few more days, (I do 40 - 50 miles a day) - so won't take long to give an idea whether it's gone for good!

I think im gonna do what you did bjorn - where do you buy all that stuff from by the way? An internet site?

Wish I could mate - :( no had to get it from the local skoda dealer - I'm guessing any VAG dealer would do :)

Actually cost around £120ish all in (for the skoda bits) - had discount on parts applied

Would advise on getting some Vaccum hose (different sizes) as one of mine split whilst removing the N249 valve.

Was just reading another post "17705 Fault Diagnosis" that seems linked very closely to this one.

My car has been about as much use as t*ts on a nun today. Toatal bag of spanners. No boost. Turbo whistles away and car goes nowhere. Somedays i think bloody hell fast. Others OMG what the hell is going on.....Yet no fault codes :( It's almost like the turbo can't be bothered somedays.

Did a VAGCOM bhp test today.....only pulling 139BHP At 5200 RPM. Theres summat wrong somewhere.

Come back Ford Focus, all is forgiven......

The whole non-boost is exactly what I had :(

Give the N249 valve a go (may as well) - and replace the vacuum hosing with some new silicone type stuff just to be sure.

It's just pants isn't it.

Maybe a mod could link the two threads together.

Hi folks,

An update to my saga.

Parts replaced so far -

New DV

Hose between turbo and intercoller

4 coil packs

4 spark plugs

Performed TB alignment

MAF

N75

Remap

Car now splutters like mad throughout boost and no friggin fault codes!! I'm running out of parts to replace, and money to be honest. Only had the car 6 months and ive spent over a grand on it. :(

Not so good.

Since i replaced the top breather hose that was split, it's been fine. :D

Right - it's been nearly 3 weeks, and over 500miles since I fit the N249 valve, and still fine - boosting nicely and no stuttering :)

Hi,

Were you getting spluttering around 1800RPM? I get it from then until about 3000RPM on part throttle.

Also is your car re-mapped?

Yep I had all kinds of spluttering/hesitation on Part and Full throttle throughout the rev range.

And nope, mines running standard map. :)

I had the same jerkiness as described here. Culprit - Top breather hose split. Sine i have changed the hose, the jerkiness occurs only during fast idle. Are there any other hoses that may be involved as well?

The pipes and hoses that run under the intake manifold can perish and fall apart too leading to rough idling.

Another update - no 17705 codes at all, has been running fine (900 miles now), had a remap recently and now I'm spluttering/boost surging/pulsing/hesitating on part and full throttle again with no codes to report. ?? - seems another problem has been highlighted. :(

Run a site search for hesitation + remap. It's a known issue with some maps.

Hi Bjorn,

Sorry to hear about your remap problems. I finally got round to buying myself a new N249 this week, and will be fitting it this weekend. I've picked some spare vac hose on your advice also.

To date, I've replaced the DV and turbo to intercooler pipe than runs down the back of the engine. The pipe fixed the 17705 for a few weeks, but now it's back and it's brought up the 17545 (Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too rich: P1137) with it (I believe these codes are best buddies!)!

How can I tell if it's running rich on idle, or at WOT? Something is obviously throwing off the fuel calculations.

So I've bought a new N249 and an Intake Air Temperature Sender (the one on the intake manifold) to see if that fixes it. Will fit soon and keep you updated.

If that doesnt fix it, I'll clean my MAF. Then clean my Throttle body. Then clean the MAP. If the 17545 remains while the 17705 goes, i shall replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator, and maybe the upstream Lambda sensor.

This all seems so silly though, as my car runs fine most of the time. The occasional surge as im pulling away, but thats nothing major.

I WILL get rid of these codes.

Note: I don't have a remap. I've been getting the 17705 code for 6 months, and am now getting the 17545 also.

Best of luck with the fixes - will be well worth it when you finally resolve the codes!

right, changed the N249 today. what an awkward little bugger that was to change, so fiddly. but it's done now, and i managed to do it without breaking anything, so it was a straight swap luckily.

just completed my 'road test' and the jerkiness has completely gone when pulling away. i used to get a weird thing when i pulled away in 1st and the car would suddenly dump all the boost and id almost go through the windscreen!!

while i was there i checked all the hoses for leaks, and all seemed well in the vacuum system.

the old valve did seem to have some dark oil in it, so that might have been what caused it to degrade over time.

i'll keep you posted on whether the 17705 and jerkiness stays away......

Check all the hoses

The hoses can be weak or be split , or be partially off

That is the start of the checks , do what you can , but be aware that the slightest pin hole can cause problems as you are accelerating as the pipes will move when the engine does

Then checks by technicians will not have to cover that and cost money
