Rattles

Featured Replies

I've had my VRs for about 20 months now and I've noticed more and more rattles starting to occur. I thought for a while it was the baby car seat and push chair in the boot etc however today I took the whole lot out and still it rattles.

It's not just one or two, - it's a whole plethora of different rattles from different parts of the interior...

Anyone else found this or is it just mine?

Could be.......You have been used to the very good build quality (initially no rattles) and since you have notice one or two rattles you have been looking out for more deliberately.

Mine is coming up to a year old and no rattles at all (touch wood). A case of you getting someone in the car and gonig for a spin to try to track them down.

What tyoe of rattles anyway? metallic? clonking? creaking?

Not sure how to describe them but I'd stop short of clonking!

I may just have super sensitive hearing but to be honest I don't think I've even been in a rattle free car!

Lol about the clonking.....

Its one of the reasons I like my vRS, genuinely the only car I have owned that HAS been rattle free. I'll wait for month 20 shall I?

I don't recall my TT ever having a rattle. Although the engine sounded so awesome it probably drowned anything else out!

Get a few on mine, but it depends on how warm/cold it is, road surface etc.... I wouldn't say that there were constant trim related rattles there like I had with my Fabia

Hi,

This may sound silly but try asking someone to lie in the back as you spin around the block and see if they can hear where the noise is coming from. I remember picking up a new Polo Saloon many years soon ago after they had just been launched. I found that there was a lot of cracking noise from the rear as I cornered. It became quite intollerable.

A mechanic curled up in the boot as I took the can for a spin. Turned out to be paint over all the welds cracking up on a strengthening bar behind the rear seat. The car was sorted after the a short spell in the body shop. Never a problem again.

Best of luck....;)

Try dropping thes seats to see if it goes away. I had an issue with noises from the Rear Seat Release Clips. Also I found the side bolster rubbing off the door, this was caused by a broken weld joint in the bolster (which was also causing a noise).

Also might be worth checking out this,

What about the spare and tool kit in the boot?

What about the spare and tool kit in the boot?

They sound to me like cabin noises but I'll check

I had a persistent rattle from the rear of the car - this turned out to be the interior plastic trim of the tailgate - two trips to the dealer has sorted it (to prove it was the trim, I inserted a few foam strips between the plastic trim and tailgate metal).

Another rattle was from the light switch - popped it out, fitted a couple of sticky pads around it and refitted - noise gone.

Hope this helps!

i have had my MK1 from new and now its 18 months old and has alot of rattles but are all coming from the rear seats/parcel shelf area.Never did it when new.

5 months on my vRS and I have a rattle from n/s rear door due to having a smart repair on a small dent and the trim being re fitted, but this is minor as the loudest rattle is from my sunglasses in the overhead holder and stuff rubbing in the glovebox! 19k on the car by the way.

Even my Passat has the odd creak, main one being the dash. :(

I've come to accept that a rattle free car is a very rare thing indeed. Just pop the radio on

My VRS is only 5 months old and has 8K on the clock. Its going in next monday to track a rattle in the dashboard that is absolutely wrecking my head ( as it only rattles at about 2500 RPM)

It sounds like a dashboard mounting screw is loose. I wouldnt mind this car has been cared for compared to the VRS TDI I had, which was always driven with gusto :D

mine rattles like a beehatch, it's coming from the seat bolster on the left rear seat, it keeps dropping off as it's only a push fit (A really cheap and nasty push fit tbh) but it's getting time to take it to a dealers to sort it.

Probably something I will have to leave until it's service and warn the dealer they are getting a fair old list of niggles to rectify on that service.

I have niggles with

Rear Bolster falls off (and rattles like buggery when it's refitted)

Windows raising and lowering themselves every now and again

Handbrake lever "cover" keeps sliding forward

No air getting into the jumbo box with the lever pulled up

glove box opens at will (actually I could look and adjust the catch on that myself)

rear seats rattle, but I can't see the usual rubber bump stops that you can adjust to stop it so am guessing they are missing.

This one does not seem quite as well screwed together as the vRS was

I had a similar one in mine, When I fitted my MFD2 I tracked it down to the Front air vent cluster (with the pop up flap in it) not being lined up properly with the internal channels (for want of a better expression) when I refitted it after the MFD2 was installed, that rattle was gone.

Should not really happen, not on a car retailing at £19K

I used to have the tailgate trim rattle but that was rectified by the dealer quite early on - will try the light switch though!

Lots of rattles on mine :P

Jumbo air box, somewhere near the passenger nearside door and one behind me somewhere

Investigations are in progress :)

Ah yes the jumbo box is a source of several rattles. What a poorly made piece of junk that really is. It creaks when you rest your arm on it!

yes I had a similar problem - if you put some vasoline on the rubbers it eases the creaking.

Ah the old vasoline comes in handy for all sorts of things doesn't it?:rofl::rofl:

Good tip though will try it? What bits do you put it on?

yes when things are a bit dry :eek:

I put some on the two rubber feet on the console beneath where the arm rest lifts. If this makes sense, can take a picture if you want. The rubbers are easily viewable when the armrest is lifted.

I had one bad rattle that was from the hard plastic surround for the third brake light. Bit of PVC tape fixed that. I'll get them to look at it with the first service. Nothing else to note so far (7k miles).

Vaseline on rubber, will that not perish the little rubber feet? Might be better with some silicone based lubricant.

had the usual rear seat rattles..but a bit of grease in the catches seemed to fix that..worths one was from the courtesy light in the roof...but dealer sorted that when it went on for service..it all seems quiet now..I just crank up the tunes anyway
