Do I need the engine cover?

Featured Replies

Like a few people, the small hose entering the top of my forge DV is rubbing on the engine cover.

Is there any good reason to keep using the engine cover?

I see some people have either protected the hose with a zip tie or trimmed the cover back for clearance.

I would trim the cover back today if I had a Dremel, but i don't, and it looks too easy to make a mess of the cover with a saw!

You don't need it, but if you see how dirty the cover gets it's a good idea to keep it on IMO.

Just stick a couple cable ties over the top of the hose, it'll stop it from rubbing the actual hose.

Problem solved!

I'd like to cut mine, but I'm the same as you... I know know it'd end up a complete mess.

My engine cover has been in the loft for years, and has not had any adverse effect on the car.

On the Bailey DV30, you can get an angled piece for the top of the dump valve from Bailey, which will allow you to still have the cover on if you want to, and it will not hit the engine cover.

i still need to get teh angled piece for mine but i know i wont and will end up replacing the hose when it finally rubs though

The cover isn't there to keep dirt off the engine... it's just there to look nice.

I cut a big hole above my recirc' valve (I just used a 3 inch hole saw)... removing the cover is fine, though...some say it's better not to have to keep things slightly cooler. I'm not sure how much effect it would realistically have on temperature, though.

This is the Bailey DV with a right angle piece fitted in place of the normal straight connector:

Thanks for the feedback guys. Nice to know what others are doing.

Following on from this.....

The standard cam cover is pretty nasty looking, what with its rough surface finish and spikey bits sticking out everywhere.

Is anyone aware of an aftermarket cam cover thats a bit nicer to look at? I have visions of a sleek glossy red one with vRS cast into the top of it mmmmm

Someone must make one surely!

Took mine off a few weeks ago as it doesn't actually do anything.

Forge do a Carbon Fibre one.

Forge do a Carbon Fibre one.

Yeah I saw they do a carbon engine cover.

But they should make a nice cam cover too.

I see some Audi TT owners have removed their cam covers and polished them. I even managed to find a red powder coated one on ebay!

Surely some engine tuning company has made one.

I'm gonna run without the engine cover, but want to find a nicer cam cover now.

I ran my car with no engine cover for ages, then finally used a dremel to cut off the corner near the DV and re-fitted it :D
