Manual window winder removal

Featured Replies

Hi all, I hope one of you guys can help me as this issue is really stumped me. I need to reseal the rear doors of my Fabia but cannot remove the window winders. I have searched the forums but cannot find a definitive answer, i know the collar next to the handle is key but what do i do with it? Push it down, squeeze it whilst pulling the handle ... hit it with a hammer, get a blowtorch .....

Any help will be much appreciated

Hold the handle with your right hand.Put your left hand thumb and first finger ,on the collar Ring which touches door panel, and doesnt turn with the handle. Pull the collar in the direction opposite the handle arm , in the same direction and plane as the plastic grill slot directions . It travels about 1/2 inch .Now pull the whole handle off the shaft . When removed you will see a splined shaft. To refit make sure the window is fully shut ,place the handle on the shaft (noting the position is a mirror image of the opposite door handle. With the left hand spring the collar back in place.

Once you have removed the handle look at the inside of the collar to see how it works. It is harder to explain than do it!

Thanks Andy,

Excellently described ... got them off in no time.

:)

Another small tip, when putting the winders back on point them to the bottom.

Ive noticed, especially with Polo's that the window can start to ease open if not fitted pointing to the bottom!

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but having received the benefit of this guidance  after much scratching of head to work out how the winder was secured, I thought the attached photo's might assist others.:)

Given the current incessant amount of rain and consequent number of leaking rear door carriers, I think many others will face the same  dilemma.

Thanks a lot for the photos! Looks much easier than on my old astra

This photo shows the detail of the fastener in the "open" position, so you can see how the locking tab slides inside the handle, it engages with the groove in the spline shaft securing the handle to it.

Original post only lets you upload 5 photo's.

I read this 10 times, running back and forth to the car before finally working it out, thanks really great help as other suggestions were of no help. It was your reference to plane and grill slots that was throwing me. Now all i need to know is how to get the screw out at bottom of card obscured by seat (can't open door at moment) and the door card can be removed

Front door? Possibly a hex screwdriver bit and a spanner or very short hex driver... Ultimately, you'd remove the seat..

You really should look at colin wilsons excellent video on youtube "skoda fabia rear door seals fix"  its a no brainer.

Cheers for this, noticed the one of my rear doorcards was damp today when I washed my car!

random tag onto this, one of the winders in mine keeps falling off as the previous owner broke the clip, does anyone know the part number for the window handle or compatible models that fit?

i'm assuming that those from the golf/polo will also fit as they look almost identical?

Cheers

if you happen to be in a scrapyard and there's a MkI fabi there, they fit easily into a sock or pocket :bandit:

It's amazing what you can smuggle out of a scrappy. Just don't get caught or you'll get beaten up :punch:

Great info.  Need to reposition handles as I get the windows dropping slightly on the Flabia.

Great advice Steamfan. Had messed about for an hour nearly breaking the winder off. Two mins after youtube handles safely on back seat. Many Thanks to you and Colin .
