running a vrs or any car using fsi on 95 will risk you burniong out the valves.

going from 95 to 99 would take a while to adjust as the ECU would need to adjust accordingly. My advice is if you are going to use 99 ron (i.e V-power) stick with it.

I use V-Power Diesel all the time.

I did some back to back testing (two full tanks of each) about 6 months ago, with Shell regular, BP Ultimate and V-Power, IIRC got better fuel consumption and the car felt perkier with the V_power and Ultimate.

On the basis that V-Power was 1p cheaper than Ultimate, I get more 'points' and the forecourts of the Shell fuel stations I can use are nicer - I chose to use V-power. I'd also been using Optimax/V-power in my Fabia for quite some time.

I must admit I've never had good results with BP Ultimate although it does well in all the reviews. I stick with V power usually.

I'm beginning to see the possible benefits of diesel now with the price of unleaded.

The benefit of Diesel is only in better consumption; currently I paying 2-3p per litre more for V-Power Diesel than V-Power petrol.

I most be the only person here who notices no difference whatsoever between standard and super unleaded!

No your not alone on this one Rob, I notice no difference either, even though I really do want to when I fill up with V power for example, which I will mention I paid £1.18 per litre for last week!! the normal Shell unleaded was only £1.03!!!

I think this statement is reinforced by the tests run by Fifth Gear (See #20) As they say, whether you would feel a difference of at best 5bhp in normal day to day driving is debatable.

I have only had my VRS since late December, and I was really disappointed with the performance until I realised I should have been using 98 RON. The fuel filler doesn't mention this but everyone who knows about the TFSI engine does. What a difference!

I use Tesco 99 and wouldn't go back. Amazing difference and only 5p per litre dearer.

Can you only get Tesco 99 in the South? I have never seen it round here.

Tesco 99 does seem to be localised and concentrated to the Southern Counties unfortunately :thumbdwn:

No, you can even get it up here in Scotland.

Does anyone have a list of locations where Tesco 99 is available?

A couple up near you old boy;

Cheers Guy. The second one is Tesco at Kingston Park (home of the Newcastle Falcons!) but it doesn't do 99 Unleaded; only 97. Not sure about the first one though but will check it out. Typical, just filled up with V Power today too!

Hi has anyone used any of the octane boosters on the market? Do they really work?

Hi has anyone used any of the octane boosters on the market? Do they really work?

I've used Miller Octane Plus on and off over the years and certainly had no detrimental effect, although I never truly quantified any performance increase.

A good way of adding 2 octane to the fuel you use.

inside my fuel cap it says 95 ron unleaded min. then underneath says super premiuim but no reference to ron.

98 RON recommended on my flap. (Can't find any 98 round my way)

Been using Tesco 99, but had a fill of Sainsbury 97 and so far it feels the same - both much better than 95 and better mpg

There isn't a massive difference.

Going from Vpower to 95RON the car feels heavier. Throttle response is down and needs more of a shove to get it going.

On Super the car just feels lighter and more sprightly. That and you get 2-3mpg more with a light foot.

Found Shell makes my octy fun like crap. So sluggish.

On anything else it's fine, but she prefers BP ultimate or normal premium.

Not all engines will like the same fuel, even if built exactly the same ;)

How about the new 1.8T i've just ordered? I'm used to running a 1990 MkII Golf G60 which always runs on V-Power, but does the same thing apply to my new octy as appears to be the general consensus with the VRs? Just wondering if with it being a lower spec performance engine whether anyone's noticed any difference... plenty of people with VRs' have by the looks of it!

:)

I was a convertor to Tescos 99 super unleaded, but for the past couple of months went back to using Ron 95, mainly due to the price.

Last week though, I went back to 99 to see if it was my imagination that I wasn't getting as good mpg and that I was putting more petrol in.

That extra 4p a litre is definately worth it and I WON'T be going backl to 95 AGAIN.

If petrol continues to rise, i'd rather invest in a push bike to use when I can.

unfortunatly all i can get is 97 ron around here though based in rotherham i've just found that tesco's in dinnington sells the 99 ron stuff, so i think i'll be having a trip up there some time soon

no your not, me too! however I do fill with super unleaded from time to time but I'm always sceptical as to whether it really is the higher ocatane or does it just say it on the label!

I noticed on my facelift the filler cap no longer mentiosn 98 ron fuel at all..all it has on is 95 ron

I haven't had my VRS long, but I've been putting Sainsbury's Super 97 RON in it as I get Nectar points - not tried any lower or higher grade fuel.

There is no Tesco's on my way to work, and the only Shell garage is slightly out of my way.

My question is; I'm happy to go out of my way to Shell, or find a Tesco, but will the benefits be that massive between 97RON and 98/99RON? It's still classed as a 'super' unleaded...
