Supercharger?!

Featured Replies

Just wondered if anyone has supercharger their furby or octy? Also is it even possible? I would of thought it was a good way of getting **** loads of power!

Any thoughts?

A supercharger works by forcing air into the cylinder, but is belt driven so requires some engine power to keep it spinning. There was a thread a while back by TaviaRS asking a similar question and I think the outcome was that for the outlay, it's better value just to go the hybrid turbo route. I'm also not sure there's a whole lot of space for one in the engine bay!

Who needs room under the bonnet

Superchargers arnt as efficient as turbochargers.

Turbochargers get there rotational energy from the waste exhaust gases passing over a turbine. This rotational energy is then used to power another turbine on the cold side which forces cold air into the cylinders. Then abit of Fuel and a spark you get BIG BANG

A super charger does the same only like chris said it uses a belt driven from the engine to power a compressor spline.

There are pros and cons with each, ie turbos create low down lagggggg whereas superchagers spool up with engine revs, ie almost instant boost.

Tbh you wouldnt gain very much if nothing but supercharging an already turbocharger engine, its a waste of time tbh.

Then engine has already been setup to run a turbocharger, so why not just run a bigger turbo

The new mini is a classic example of how the turbocharger is more effiecent than a supercharger. Homework, go on parkers and see the MPG specs for the older supercharged cooper s and compare them with the newer turbocharged cooper s :D

I would have said the same if it wasn't for the 1.4TSI engine that's recently come out

Although that's more a case of turbo-charging an already super-charged engine...

IIRC the supercharger on the McLaren SLR requires 100HP just to drive it alone!

Superchargers are in their element in aero engines, as they can have 'gears' - generally referred to as 'stages' - to give extra boost as the air gets thinner at altitudes.

comparing the two mini engines isn't really fair as they are totally different engines not just the type of charger.

one is a chrysler engine and the other peugeot i think.

and no compound charging isn't a waste of time at all, yes a super charger can restrict your top end when your getting into the 500+bhp mark but when your at say 400bhp you won't be boosting till 4k so the super charger fills in the bottom half of the rev range.

We had an R32 come into work with a supercharger.... bloody awful.

Same R32 came back at a later stage with an f'off turbo..... much much better!!

I thought the new mini cooper s had the same engine as the corsa VXR

Suppose your right, i was comparing them as similer weight, similer engine size, gearing, power etc.

maybe it has but i thought it had a PSAengine in it, unless vauxhall are using it aswell under a joint venture.

might take a look into it :)

Off topic but.......

"The 207 GTI's package looks more promising on paper, however. Instead of going for a large swept volume engine, Peugeot has downsized and fitted the 1.6-litre four cylinder that it developed in conjunction with BMW"

Looks like the 207 gti 1.6 turbo has the same engine as the bmw mini then. BUt after researching the Corsa does indeed have a vauxhall engine. You were right about the mini having a french derived engine

woot!!

thats gone down in my diary that has.

february 1st 2008.

got something right.

doesn't happen often :D

Lmao

What about an electric supercharger, (a 12volt fan)? For example a boat bilge pump?

Perhaps built into the air intake? would this work or not?

Not enough power in an adapted fan to deliver the air pressures and volumes required.

To do it properly would need a pretty heavy duty electric motor which would put huge loads on the electrical system.

It can be done but it isn't practical.

Turbo chargers are the way to go.
