New Exhaust

Not saying it "would" be failed, just that it can be failed!! ;)

My point is that a de-cat is illegal. If you're happy to live with the fact that come MOT time you might have to either "re-cat" or know an MOT tester that will "put it through" to pass then it's all good.

I've just gone through an MOT with a decat Magnex pipe. The garage rang me to tell me the car had a decat pipe on it, I said I know! They'd been ringing around to see if anybody had a spare cat and they couldn't find one. I told him I had the original in my garage.

They were worried the car wouldn't pass the emissions test. As it turns out it did "only just".

They never mentioned anything about the legalities of this modification, the garage is a VERY big chain.

what does it sound like is it quite deep and good or what??

Just to put this one 'to bed', I checked this out a few weeks ago with a m8 who works for the Department of Transport. He does layby stop-checks with the Police. His name's Dave.

John: "Ay-up Dave, I'm thinking of getting a de-cat on my Furby. Is it legal?

Dave: "Totally legal, John. You're not tested on emissions, just a smoke test AND a noise test. The noise level is at my discretion as 'tester', but in practice, unless its silly-loud, I wouldn't 'do' you. MOT testers are interested in the Smoke test."

John: "If you did me on noise levels Dave, I'd have to tell your missus about 'Prague'!

Dave: "What happened in Prague, STAYS in Prague!" :finger:

Very good, what happened in prague  :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

For the stupid (probably just me :o), is this smoke test the same or different to the emissions test?

And yes, what did happen in Prague!

Smoke test will only be done on diesels and it measures the amount of crap that comes flying out the exhuast rather that the CO2 it chucks out.

Which is what I understood from this forum, that's why I was very surprised that the garage was talking about just passing the emissions test.

Surely this national chain would know about diesel testing at MOT time.

I'm still confused.

Think: "Statuesque East European Pole-Dancers/Absinthe-sodden Brits on the pi$$/Arm being set on fire with green flame from badly-ignited afore-mentioned Absinthe/Carpet of establishment being set on fire, when comrades roll him on floor in vain attempt to extinguish arm/Escape down cobbled streets back to B & B, to evade Czech Policejni"

:asthanos:

The car now revs a lot free-er(s?), and sucks like a large hoover. It's also got that lovely turbo whistle now.

Turbo whistle?? or Turbo bearings screaming for help?

You've obviously not heard a proper turbo whistle then. The bearings sound nothing like a turbo whistle.

I know... i was just joking:)

I know all about proper turbos spinning up...

Here is a pic of john's (my mate) toy... 1800hp at 2800rpm!!

And we have just taken off the one turbo and put two on, hopfully going for 3000hp V12!!

I can fit my head in each turbo inlet (with engine off:rofl:). Running with no filters! too much restriction!

Its a t55 tank engine for those who want to know.

ive had my fabia without a cat on for a good 5 months now prob more and no problems at all, u get a really nice rumble and when tonkin along at a safe speed its a nice whistle and then a deep grumble, none of this hair dryer 1.1 corse lol

Okay another question about the smoke test. Could you car fail an MOT if you had a really smokey map? Or again is that okay on the basis a smokey map only smokes on load, not on revs...and a test is obviously done out of gear?

Who knows, I'm still no further forward in understanding the 'smoke' test / emissions test issue.

:(

why have you replaced the perfectly decent factory fitted part ?? Does it really make that much difference ??

Indeed it does. Much smoother and free-er reving.
