Insurance, they having a laugh or what?

Featured Replies

So, time has come for me to learn to drive (again, started but ran out of money) and i'm looking to buy and insure a cheapish car. at the moment my girlfriends learning in my sisters old '91 1.0 nissan Micra LS. Insurance on that, for her, is around £500 3rd party F&T. for me, its closer to £1200. top top that all off, i got a quote for £1500 for the '02 plate fabia 1.2 (i think) in the forecourt.

How does that work? why am i being charged so much for a crappy car in the first place, and then, why is a much much better car (12 years newer, power steering, electric windows, etc etc etc) only around 300 quid more? it makes NO sense at all.

grr. silly insurance companies.

anybody got any good links to cheap ones for young drivers?

You're not paying for protection of the value of your own car, you're paying for protection from the risks of being a young driver...(ie assuming you are male, I believe you have a 20% chance of crashing in your first two years)

... so said someone on the TV the other day :).

I hate it equally as much as you probably do, but at the end of the day, statistically young drivers cost insurance companies a lot of money - they have to recover that cost somewhere!

seems to be about the going rate, sadly mate :(

good luck with it all though!

i know. i've never had a quote under £1K, unless i had my dad on the policy too. atm i'm insured on his rav4, but i really want my own car. :(

been looking at that fabia i mentioned, 3995 (could probably knock it down) but don't really want to go on finance as i'm moving out in november.

been to a few local car auctions, on 'budget night' and there were a few bargains, but i wouldn't fit in any of them (i'm a good 6'6", and broad accross the shoulders, with long thighs :( ) and the ones i could fit in were vastly out of my budget (around £500).

autotrader's useless, as i thought it might be.

First few years of car ownership are notoriously expensive for little gain, but your premium will start going down as you accumulate NCB. Best to get an old banger until then, imho :D There's no harm in putting your parents on the policy as named drivers and it should help to reduce the premium (female relatives are usually a better bet as they're a lower insurance risk)....

Chris

Depends on the car, area etc.....

When I just passed my test I had high quotes that got lowered when my Dad was added onto the policy. now I have to pay £20 to add him! LOL

Just to test i got a quote on a Fabia VRS. Bearing in mind I'm 26, had my Felicia since 206 and and driving for 7 years.

Currently I paid £700 to insure my Felicia and its renewal time at the end of March. Checking prices on confused it should be £550 roughly

For a Fabia VRS it would cost about £927 for the cheapest quote according to Confused regardless of the start date.

The Vauxhall Astra is a popular one. I had one 1995 shape, 1.4 Merit. Was good and reliable. might be worth seeing if these are in your budget. mine was written off in 2005 for £1000. they are cheap to run and insure.

I am 6'3" and there's enough space for me in my Favorit. They're a good banger car, available cheaply, cheap to insure, relatively reliable, cheap parts etc. Insurance for me as a new driver at 26 years old was £700, and my renewal after 1 year was £520. I assume the Felicia has the same sort of space as it is based on the Favorit, as it's the newer model it might be a better choice than a Favorit, and they are also available relatively cheaply.

For me eCar Insurance - Get a low cost car insurance quote from eCar Insurance is the cheapest by miles and no other insurer can come close. But I guess it's all luck and whether the insurer's equations on risk work in your favour or not. There is no single insurer that's like a magic wand which is cheap for everyone so you have to call around for quotes. If there was, we'd all be with that insurer :)

Start by looking here Cheap Car Insurance: Speedily compare 120 quotes + possible cashback... I would also recommend trying ecar as on confused.com for some reason that quotes me £200 more than I pay direct, also TPFT is cheaper then TPO for some reason.

Just to chime in there's 3 Favorits on Ebay at the moment.

The best one being the white one in Ashton. IMO but they all would need looking at.

Apart from that I'll agree with anewman. My Felicia was reasonable to buy, parts are cheap and its cheap to fix and maintain too.

:D

It doesn't always get cheaper as you get older.

Just insured my Masser that I pick up on Friday.

It's got top end thatcham kit, a tracker, is garaged, kept in a reasonable post code, I'm female (mid thirties), no convictions so have a guess at the cost.

As a clue the excess is £750:eek:

Iv been driving 4 1/2 years now and am nearly 22 and i am still on my mums policy! I sat down once and worked out if it would be worth getting my own policy and building my own NCB but its not! Its works out cheaper if i wait til 2009 to get my own policy, so thats what im going to do!

Adrian flux seem to be the cheapest by miles, might be worth checking them out. Makes a difference if you have a good post code tho.

Good luck mate :)

Theres no logic to it !!

The Superb bog std £430

My Octy 4x4 heavily modded (350 bhp etc etc) a whisker over £600, fair enough

The M3 CS bog std, £1080 :eek:, some firms wouldnt even quote

The 4x4 is quicker than the M3, the mods indicate its owned by a speed freak :) Yet the Beemer is 60% more, aparently its a lot more "nickable"

Just about to get a 350z tweaked to 480 bhp, wonder what that will cost

If your still on PureGT PM Jez, Posts as Insbro, runs a biggish brokerage & has helped a few out in the past.

hmmm, i'll have a look at a cheap felicia at work then, we should have one.

i think i've got a reasonable postcode, no major car crime/crime in general that i know of. any way to check?

whats PureGT?

whats PureGT?

Just another forum

I was insured on my Dads policy until I was 24 so I wouldn't worry about being a named driver.

The only time insurers will be bothered is if your parents insure the car but your names on the V5 (Is this known as fronting?) as they will only insure the legal owner of the car.

The only time insurance gets significantly cheaper is when you have a good ncb and are over 25.

upmystreet.com gives you crime figures for your area so you can get a good idea of what your area is like against the national average for car crime which should give you and idea.

I was quoted £852 for a 2 year old Maser GS so something around that price?

I wish - how many miles a year was that for?

This is for 30K a year and SDP and business

10k social & domestic

That goes towards explaining it a bit more why it was cheaper than mine.

Just checked and you are a bit more mature than me, the car is less than a year old and it's a higher model.

I'm paying the princely sum of £2379.99 - has some quotes nearer £3.5K though:eek:

Although be aware that if you drive on someone else's policy, the car has to be registered in their name and they have to be the main driver and do the bulk of the miles in the car, otherwise you are committing insurance fraud by misrepresenting the risk!
