vRS Petrol, Oil Top Up

Featured Replies

Just some advice,

My car has 7k on it and the oil light came on this morning. Is this regular for cars to need a top up in the first 10k miles?

Thanks in advance

If is it the Tfsi engine these are known to drink oil. Ideally you should check your oil at each petrol fill up.

Also ideally the required oil is 5w-30 castrol edge stuff and its not cheap.

Thanks

Tony

Yes, the tfsi drinks oil like a fish, ours as gone through 2 litres in 14k miles and a service in there as well. You should check the oil at least every 1k miles every few weeks and top up as required, I wouldn't rely on the oil light

To put it into perspective, old engines used to ditch between nothing and 1L between a 5000 or 6000 mile service. If you assume .5L per 5000 Miles, then you would never have noticed between services since the min to max is usually 1L.

Just multiply it that by the difference in service interval and you see that it isn't as bad as you might think.

Also new engines do tend to drink quite a bit until their first service anyway IMHO.

Quite normal as others have already said. Make sure you keep a regular eye on it in future and perhaps keep a litre in the boot.

Thanks for all the help! Got a shock when i took out the dipstick:eek: Its topped up now with an extra litre in the boot.

I know you've bought a fresh supply already but ...

Shell Helix Ultra VX 1 litre from your friendly neighbourhood Skoda Dealer complete with a carry bag containing a funnel, wipes and gloves for £14.08 is a pretty good buy IMHO

Good call bahnstormer, I will be in tomorrow to ask if they have this offer on or not. I like bags and gadgets so that'll be right up my street. Lovin the car BTW:thumbup:

Its not a particular 'offer' just a standard 'parts/service' sale.

Darn sight better than my local Shell garage that wants about £18.50 for the same (without the bag and frillies).

This is exactly what I have in the boot.

I've now just passed the 5,000 mile mark and the dipstick is still reading two thirds level to the full indicator.

I personally attribute higher oil consumption to gentle running in leading to the seals not fully bedding in. Although Ive always used mechanical sympathy with my VRS, Ive not been scared to push it from new. Ive done the same with all my cars and they have all been bullet proof in the engine department. :)

Just checked my oil after my light came on my TFSI (just under 8k on the clock) have just added a litre and a half to top up! Must check more often.

p.s I used Castrol Edge 5w-30. I will not trust my oil light again!!!

my vRS gets a regular thrashing and doesnt use anything like as much oil as others have stated, maybe im just lucky?

Probably more to do with my post above. Running cars in in different ways definetly changes their oil usage attributes imo.

I've just passed 11k in mine and even with all the extra power and torque the engine is producing its only needed a quarter of a litre before it had an oil change at 10k.

Halfords 5L of VW504/VW507 oil for £40 which is a lot cheaper and up to the same standard.

Use that to fill up your 1L bottle :)

Costco £11 plus vat for 3x1 litre Castrol Edge 5W30. ;)

About a litre every 7000 miles for me. I've never had the light come on I've just been topping up with 1/4l every so often.

Where is our nearest costco?

Check fleabay as I managed to 5 x 1 litre bottles of the stuff (minus the handy funnel) for £24 inc postage

Can you PM me next time you're thinking of going up as I might well ask you to get me 3 packs in exchange for some beers at that price if you didn't mind.

Just been and I'm afraid to say that it looks as though they have stopped doing it.:(

Sorry folks.

No problem, thanks for looking anyway.

I tend to get 5L of millers VW507 for about £35 and can get a discount for buying 4, but at £11 + VAT for 3L that was a heck of a buy.

What with oil in an engine being rather important :)

I have a vRS petrol and although I've only had it a couple of months its probably worth me making sure I've got some oil for if/when I need it.

In all honesty is there a great deal between the various 5w-30 grade oils out there?

You seem to pay a small fortune for the likes of Shell & Castrol - but go the "low brand" route and it is a hell of a lot cheaper.

Is it worth sticking to the big brands for those smallish oil top-up's?

Yes there is a huge difference in the quality of the 5w-30 oils.

For a vRS TFSI your oil must comply with VW504. Don't know about fixed interval)

I would say that the halfords VW504/VW507 will be perfectly good enough, especially if you change more often than required. Somebody on here said it was comma oil and that IIRC they worked for halfords.
