1.9TDI - Pulling away from standstill

Featured Replies

I've had my 1.9TDI for about 6 weeks now and in general I'm very happy with it. However, just wondered what experiences other 1.9TDI owners have had with regard to pulling away from standstill. I've found that if I try to apply some revs as I come of the clutch to found bitepoint, the engine sounds and feels rather rough. Interestingly, I found it smoother if I just come off the clutch with nothing on the accelerator as the car will 'creep' both in first or in reverse. I thought it was autos that did this. As the car creeps forward, I then apply the gas and I tend to get a decent smooth 'take-off'. The 'creeping' forward even seems to work on a slight incline. I have read somewhere that the 1.9TDI is a bit difficult to get smooth starts - do other owners have similar experiences? Is this one aspect where the 2.0TDI is better? Thanks!

Mine is rough however I pull away. :o But then mine's not exactly normal anymore....

I wouldn't worry about that rough sound, and I reckon the best way to pull away is to give it around 1500rpm in 1st before slipping in the clutch. Depends how fast you wish to pull away? ;) 3000rpm and dumping the clutch also works.... a few times.... :D

Mine is ok from a standing start. I think I have recreated your issue on some occasions especially when cold (and with cold feet :) )

I did have a 2.5v6 diesel before and you could comfortably do all your slow turning / parking without touching the accelerater, on the 1.9 it helps to give it a little bit of gas, but not anymore than say 1250-1500 rpm, until you've moved off a car's length.
