Volvo S40 Diesel

Anyone know anything about them? the 04 to present model

I am thinking of replacing the vrs with one as i think they look really smart and i do too many miles for a petrol car that uses v power

My sister has an s40 sport 07 plate, 2.0tdi. Bright red with bbs wheels and the sport bodykit.

Its a lovely motor, runs well, is really nice to drive. Quite good on fuel she gets roughly the same Mpg as my fabia vrs.

The only thing i find is with the 18" wheels and sports suspension the ride is quite firm...... but on syaing that it is not as crashy as the fabia if you know what i mean.

The dealers are spot on around here, we use harratts wakefield for both my dads xc90 and her s40. Servicing isnt as cheap but you pay for what you get. Skoda dealers are crap compared to volvo dealers i have found.

i would have guessed that its the same engine as in the Mondeo isnt it?

I sure that the petrol engine is same as the one thats in the focus ST

I looked at these a while back, I thought the interior space was pretty poor. The main thing that put me off was the lack of a footrest for the left foot, the clutch pedal is pretty tight to the tunnel.

Also quite overpriced for what you get, they seem to charge premium prices without quite being a premium manufacturer.

I think the S40 is built on the focus chassis so no doubt it uses the same power plants.

If not an S40 what would people recommend?

ST engine was originally from Volvo afaik.

Lots of bits from the Ford parts bucket but better put together. Volvo dealers also have a good rep here but you are paying a premium. Nearly went for a used S60 D5 myself before the Octy.

Sorting out the crashyness of a Fabia is easy, just fit Koni FSDs instead :)

Just a re bodied Focus really and none the worse for that. Very expensive new though. The only interesting one in my opinion is the 2.4 D5. I'd go for the V50 estate though.

The current Volvo S40/V50 is on the same platform as the Focus, C-max and Mazda3. I would have assumed that the 1.6 and 2.0 diesels are the french HDIs that Ford and Mazda use but not sure how true that is.

They're very smart but as others have said, very expensive - I owuld have loved a V50 but no chance of that!

You're right in that the 1.6 and 2.0 are Ford/PSA units. The only Volvo unit is the 2.4 five pot diesel. This goes well in the big V70 so in this application it is a very brisk car indeed. Initially only available with an auto box on the D5 but a manual is available now.

Although the Volvo automatic is a joy to use (did I really just say that?!) even if the + and - for the tiptronic are the wrong way round :D

I would advise competely against the new breed of Volvos. My best mate has a 55 plate S40 2.0D SE. Bought it brand new with the sat nav, winter pack blah blah. Its been back to the dealer over and over for various faults. The in built phone draining the battery, the cars imobiliser not working, the door locking not locking, the cd player packed up (twice) and now the doors are playing up again. Its not old and it wasn't cheap. It's a shame because his S80 was amazing, but he wanted to downsize. He has vowed never ever to by a Folvo again.

If going Swedish I think I prefer Saab's 9-3 :o
