Number ??

Featured Replies

What is a 56 or whatever number plate please ??? I have never been able to understand these numbers ::confused:

Thanks.

mid 2006

I dont think they thought very hard about new registrations.. a car from mid 2011 will have the same registration as a car from 2001 unless they add another number..

Hi Spinner

What is mid 2006 ??? I still do not understand , what do the numbers mean ??

the first number is the time of year, 0 at the begining of the year and 5 middle of the year, i cant remember the exact dates they come out.

the second number is the year; 2004 = 4 2007 = 7

i.e YG56 SYR is mid 2006

The 2 letters at the start are supposed to be something to do with the town the car was registered in. My car is BU and was registered in Birmingham, no idea if that is still the case

last 3 letters are just random

OK so 52 was middle of 2002 correct, and 58 middle of 2008. So what could be begining or end of 2008 ?? ?8

You answered your own question..

I *think* the plan is to go to MY10 for 2010, then MY60 for 2010.5

(so MY11/MY61, MY12/MY62 etc)

What on earth was wrong with A, B, C, D etc? If it aint broke, dont try and fix it!

08s are being PDI'd at our garage now

'Cos we'd used all of the letters up ya donut :smashfrea;)

Babs is spot on and if you think about it it's simpler than the old system as letter prefixes don't obviously link to a particular year (i.e you had to just know that G was 89-90 etc) where as 08 is obviously registered in 08, a 57 is registered at the end of '07 (or start of 08).

It's a **** system. Of all the possible alternatives we had to go with this crap :thumbdwn:

I sometimes think it would be easier to just issue everyone with their own personal number that you can keep to use on each car you own.

06 1st march til 31st august

56 ist sept till 28 feb

so 56 plate could be reg in 2007

What alternative would you rather use?

Bearing in mind this will last for 50 years with no change of format.

as far as i know it, the number plate system ATM goes like this:

two random ish letters, then with a 5, or a 0 to indicate if it was from march to september (0) or september to march (5) then the year, then random letters.

example: AP02 HCF would be registered in march-september 2002. if it was AP57 HCF it would have been registered in september 2002-march 2003.

AFAIK, letters at the start aren't random. They're normally assigned to a dealer/group.

Huzzah for me knowing things :)

.... except that there will be an EU-standard numbering system before long - all-change again :D

The local memory tag can be a town/city, a county or a region. Take 'G' for example - 'Garden of England' - Brilliant! :thumbdwn:

Yep, and K is for Luton. Obviously!
