Surely a bonnet respray is easy? Err no.

You know when you get a car just how you want it? Well that is what I had just over a week ago. After a very quick Westfield, a TT, a Subaru and a Lotus S2 111s, I had decided to go back to my favourite car, the Skoda Fabia VRs. Frugal, understated and very quick and makes sense at the moment as I am setting up my own businesses.

Remappped, huge brakes, suspension changes and a ARB, it is a real sleeper and provides a lot of for the ££££ and you guys have provided some great advice and help :D:thumbup:

Glyn from Elite Detailer did an amazing job correcting the paint and I then started to look after it properly. I bought a PW, an AB lance and a load of products from Polished Bliss, Monza Car Care and Clean Your Car. (Great service from all!)

The pear-shaped ball starting rolling when the plum-sized rock landed on the bonnet on the A1M. Bang!!! After inspecting it when we arrived home, there was a nasty, down to the metal chip + dent and also 2 more chips where it had bounced. Bu**er.

So, after speaking to my local Chips Away guy (who is a great chap, has done some very good work for me on wheels and small scratches), he recommended a local bodyshop / paint place who he uses for bigger jobs.

The car was dropped off on Thursday morning and it was ready to be collected on Friday evening. Unfortunately having got it home and under the halogens, the paint is not a 100% match (too light), they have really scratched the front wings, there is an orange peel effect on at least two areas and there are numerous fisheyes.

To say I was disappointed is an understatement. I was gutted :(

To double check my thoughts, I saw Glyn this morning and he confirmed my suspicions. Not only is the paint not a perfect match, the job is not brilliant and they have just not taken any care with what they have done :(:(

I made it VERY clear when I dropped the car off that it needed to be a good job and that I look after the car and it had received a lot of detailing work. I am not sure what happened, but perhaps I wasn't clear enough I also told them not to wash the car, and thank goodness they actually listened to this part of what I said.

So, I am taking it back on Monday for them to match the paint properly PLUS do a good job of it. It is going to need more paint correction and so I am going to look for at least a contribution to this.

Any thoughts, help, advice would be much appreciated.

Yours, miserably, :(

Jon

Is this place in Hull? If you don't want to name them would you pm me.

Phil

PS I hope you get it sorted asap! I hate getting things done and them turning out to be not too great at all.

Hi Phil,

Did I see you today? Near Melton?

Anyway, yes, it is a place in Hull - no names at the moment until it's concluded - if they don't rectify it to my satisfaction, then I will name and shame.

Jon

i know what you mean john mine goes back in to sort the mess a guy did,i nearly sold the car because of it,same problems,my door at the bottom is purple, and the boot is two shades darker,i said i wanted a perfect job,so its going back....again:mad:

Oh man, sorry to hear that Gary :(

It just amazes me that you cannot trust people to do a proper job. It is SO disappointing....

I put a thread on here a few weeks ago on a similar disappointing experience I had with an insurance company nominated bodyshop. Panel fit was awful and the colour was miles out.

Pleased to say the bodyshop I got to do the re-work did an excellent job.

i told him if its not the job he promised when it comes back, then i will have him up in the small claims court,i have been patient because he is one of my workmates best mate, but i explained today,it may be a skoda, but when you add it up i have a LOT of cash in that car,and with what i have pent did he really think he could get away with it,i have resisted the urge for violence so far,but one smart comment from him and i think i'd lose it.

Hope you get yours sorted soon, mine could be going to a guy who re sprays supercars,he says he can do the job right:)

When I had Golf's I tried about half a dozen different body shops in Hull and they were all crap, not one of them gave the quality of finish I was after. I ended up using a place in Leeds and also a place in Elvington, I'd be interested to know which shop you used in Hull if you wouldn't mind PM'ing the details.

sory to hear that mate hope they get it sorted?

I Don't think so - not sure I went by that way. I was up that way Monday to Friday morning and evening though! Any one know who owns the P700 blue VRS? I've seen it a couple of times and thought it didn't look standard! *envy*:)

The thing I don't like is that these people are not machines - so you don't always get the same quality.

Thanks for all the comments guys - KR MAN, I have heard that a place in Elvington is pretty good - can you post the details or PM me please?

I will PM people the business I am involved with IF they don't sort it out - I am going to give them one chance tomorrow.

Holy hell Jon...feel real bad for you.

It just goes to show that some place dont give a monkeys about others pride and joy....

Hope you get it resolved asap.

Keep us posted.

Cheers

Cheers Steve - hope to get it resolved tomorrow - polite but firm - they need to rectify this and pay for any incurred costs - eg. taxis and have it detailed again by Glyn.

Defo.

Bloody fools!

Some places say they will do this that and the other, and do....none of it!

Cowboys. Makes me laugh, if it's obvious there is orange peel everywhere, and the wrong colour, how they let it leave the garage is beyond me.

i think its different getting job on cheap by someone in their spare time as your taking your chances there tbh but when a company takes your business through the front door they should be doing everything they can to do the job properly.

it must be quite annoying :(

Annoying! I was spitting feathers!!!!

Right, I'm off to see them in the next hour or so.... will post an update on my return and yes, they will paying for the taxi home

You go Jon!

Hope it gets sorted because that is one very pretty Furby when polished!

Well, just got back and they have been excellent. Took all points on board and are doing the work again, plus blending in the paint on the wings. They also gave me a lift home :)

Fingers crossed, I will have a properly sorted car in a couple of days!

Don't know if you still need the details Jon and sorry for the delay but I couldn't find the number;

Motor Body Cosmetics, Unit 6 Laveracks Ind Estate, Elvington 01904 608861. His work is absolutely show standard, he did the red Vento VR6 that was one of Performance VW's cars of the year.

The place in Leeds is NCR Bodycare, Jack Lane, Leeds 0113 2449135. Did a lot of work on my old mk2 Golf, top job as well with lead as filler etc, car looked just as good 2 years after it was done, the lad who bought the car off me asked how recently the work had been done and couldn't believe it when I said 2 and a half year.

Hope it all gets resolved to your safisfaction ASAP.

KR MAN, many thanks indeed! I hope I will not need them :o , but if I do, at least I know it will be going to someone good! :)

Appreciate you digging the details out!

I cant wait to see it again, i could look at your car all day!

Ok i know i have one too but my paintwork is crap in comparison!

  • Author

Right then - update time :)

They took it back, were very helpful and listened to my concerns and the result? A good job (I think). Much better than the last "effort". Car needs a good clean and correction again - Glyn is booked for next week. I will reserve my final opinion until then! :P

The only downside is that they have managed to scratch and mark the seat plastic and also the sill plastic near the pedal - a really deep scratch  :(. Needless to say I will not be paying for the repair but I do need someone to do it. So any good recommendations would be very much appreciated!

Sorry to hear about this John - what a hassle :thumbdwn:

I also have a very good recommendation for you, just over the water in N.Lincs. I'll get you the details later. The recommendation came to me from a very high place, so I'd have no hesitation in using them.

Steve, that would be a life saver! The last thing I need now is another person who doesn't treat my car with any respect :(

Thanks again :)
