Best Tuning Box?

Featured Replies

Hi

Does anyone have some performance parameters for the gains a Dragon Box provides. eg 30-60 through gear etc. I have one set at the recommended place by dragon (11 of 16) and i'm sure it feels quicker but no hesitations at 1800-2000K as i felt with the newer 7 pin box!

There is only very slightly more smoke and this is only when under full load. It does seem to rev to 4K so im assuming its working. If i remove the fuse am i right in assuming that it will return to standard? This may be a good way of testing??

Cheers

Matt

This is exactly what I found with mine

Been given a Dragon box and fitted it yesterday.

Don't know if it's a digi or analouge version tbh. The only identification is TBPD010.

No obvious signs of adjustment on it.

I've noticed a pretty massive performance improvement, but like some of you, a decidedly large hesitancy around the 2000 rpm moment.

Seems to accelerate ok initially, then very briefly stop before a 2nd surge of power.

Is this a normal feature of the box? Doesn't make for particulary smooth driving, as this behaviour is the same regardless of how the car is driven.

Don't know if I'm going to be able to live with it tbh. I'll give it a week or two before deciding I think.

I have a Chip Express tuning box on mine. Can't praise it enough. More flexible than a remap and damn near the same feel.

Not cheap though at £400 but the service is great.

Diesel Tuning by CHIP Express

Is this what gives you the 185bhp you once said you have? Only that's about 15-20bhp more than you can achieve through over-fuelling alone. You've either got a remap-in-a-box like a Bluefin or a OneClick, which is something entirely different, or these ChipExpress bods saw you coming...

The dragon box has a jumper you can change to adjust the settings. It's inside the box and you have to open it up at the opposite end to where the D-type plug is. Unscrew the two screws and take the end off the box then you'll see the jumper inside. Make sure you have the ignition switched off and change the jumper by one setting at a time then give the engine a run..... Or that's how Dragon advise to do it.

With regard the other issue..... I don't have any issue with hessitation.... In fact after fitting the dragon box i found my hessitation issues at around 2k seemed to get better rather than worse. Try different settings.... Mine is one of the ones that only has 7 settings and i've tried settings 4 through to 7 (most power) I initially left it on 7 for a while before knocking it down to setting 6 as 7 was very powerfull but pretty rough for day to day driving. Setting 6 is a lot smoother and is only slightly less powerfull and the car still produced 165bhp on the rollers @ Awesome using setting 6. Every engine is slightly different so what works best on my car may not on yours etc....

The only other thing to be sure of is whether the box is for the Fabia vRS.... Not sure but that could be causing problems if it isn't mapped correctly and is in fact meant for another engine output.

The mrs is wanting a dragon box for her vRS now but has said she would go for a 'medium' setting with a little more power than standard but without getting any rough throttle issues etc....

Cheers

Dave.

What are these 'jumpers' that you speak of Dave, and what do they look like?

Some sort of an adjusting screw I presume? Does it have numbers on it?

Been far better if they'd put it on the outside imo, or is that too easy?

The box is specific to the PD130 btw.

Just had wheelspin in 3rd by hoofing it too much.

Too much power at the mo., or am I acting a bit old and woosy?

Driving in me slippers next time. ;)

The jumper is an electronics jumper like you find on cct boards or the back of a DVD or CD-ROM drive to select whether it's a master or slave drive etc...... It's a small plastic connector that connects two metal pins on the cct board in the dragon box.

With regard opening the dragon box you should find two screws at the opposite end to where the D-type connector is. Unscrew both screws and the end of the case will come off you'll then be able to see the jumper connectors at the end of the cct board inside.

If you look at the pic below the screws i'm talking about would be at the bottom end of the box as you look at the picture.

Once you adjust the box settings you should feel a difference... I suspect the box is on the most powerfull setting.... Maybe have a word with the person who gave you the box as they may be able to tell you what setting it was on etc.....

Cheers

Had a dragon box for a while.

I think theyre great for the money, I too had the "stutter" at just under 2k in 2nd and 3rd gear, annoying but you get used to it.

I had it on setting 6 out of 7.

7 was a bit rough and MPG dived.

It's virtually identical to the dragon box, also a bit more sophisticated than a simple overfuel mod. I'm not fussed either way as it works great for me, you pays your money you makes your choice :P

Where does it connect, then? In the engine bay or in the cabin? Because if it connects in the engine bay, all it does is overfuel. Obviously there's a difference between the way an analogue resistor box makes the engine overfuel, and the way a digital one does (in essence the analogue one adds more fuel across the rev range, whereas a digital one only ups the fuelling at higher revs), but neither affect anything other than the fuelling, and neither will get you much past 170bhp.

I guess what I'm saying is that the price and the performance claims are on the high side for anything other than a proper (i.e. boost AND fuelling) remap - potentially knocking on misrepresentation. But if you're happy, that's the main thing... :)
