Its not for me as such.....

There are 3 different types.....

- resistor mod aka Evry - cheap and effective but can cause engine warning light to come on (easily cleared with VAG-COM). I ran one of these on my Fabia with no ill effects, no engine lights and 2 MOT passes. Also sold it on for a little shy of what I paid for it. Cost < £30 if you buy or < £5 if you DIY

- analogue tuning box - basically a resistor mod which uses a variable resistor to allow it to be adjusted to a point where it doesn't trigger the engine light. Have run one of these on the Mondeo (Tandem tuning) with no issues. Costs a bit more than a resistor mod, but again sold for £20 shy of what I paid for it so not all bad.

- digital tuning box - basically a resistor mod which is electronically adjusted throughout the rev range to vary the resistance. This means it can be more aggressive at certain points of the range and so won't trigger the engine light. Have also run one of these on the Mondeo (Dragon Digital) with no issues aside from the screws on the casing going a bit rusty (which is most probably more down to where I located it!). Quite a bit more expensive than the analogue boxes, but lots of 2nd hand units on eBay. Sold mine for about £50 less than I bought it for. Some of the more expensive units piggy back on the ECU and can alter boost as well, but you're well into remap money by then and a remap will do a much better job.

I think of the 3, I found the analogue box offered the best performance gains and I personally wouldn't bother buying a digital box again. Resistor mod is quick and dirty but lacks the adjustment which means you can't turn it up or down if you fancy. By far the best bang for buck mod though.

Chris

none stay away....remap all the way:thumbup:;)

I had a look at the Remus Powerizer range whilst at Autosport and it's an impressive bit of kit.

Power gains are respectable but not as high as you can get by going for a remap, but then it's a DIY plug and play unit so swings and roundabouts.

I priced one up for a Kia cee'd (CRDi) and it was about £500 to give me 140bhp and 229lb/ft which isn't bad from a 1.6 Kia engine :D

What about Revo?

Heard good things about them...

Revo is a remap and costs a lot more than a tuning box and is not transferable/saleable when you've finished with it.

Oh yeah DURRR!

I have a dragon box

cost me £150 second hand

works well

I have it on setting 6/7, no extra smoke unless I boot it in a high gear, which I dont do anyway to protect the clutch.

You do lose a little bit of smoothness in the rev range, noticable kick at 2000rpm in 3rd gear, but £ per :) its pretty good

wats the site for the dragon box mate im intersted

eBay is probably your best bet for a 2nd hand one. www.dragonperformanceuk.com is Dragon's home page...

Chris

Just to add. If you have a dragon performance box you can get dragon to alter the setting (like laptop tune for tunit) for a price.

Just keep it stock and screw the **** out of it

  • 1 month later...

I have seen Tandem Tuning boxes on ebay claiming to be digital and seen as Dragon have gone "upmarket" to £425 (from around £290) their (tandem) price of £249 seems like the cheapest around ATM.

Aside from the usual pro's and con's of box vs remap has anyone any experience of a Tandem Tuning digital box?

Yes I did a search and all I found was Scooby Chris's analogue reference - correct me if I'm wrong - probably are :o

there are alot of tuning companys out there as i sell tuning modules i get mine from italy and i would say there are alot of just resisters in boxes out there , but they work

Thats what I wanted to know! Is the Tandem Tuning digital unit kosher or just a resistor box with black n red wires hanging out of it???

They get good positive feedback on T'Ebay???

Dragon are selling boxes on Ebay that will fit the VRS for £150 new. They are spot on TBH and from what I have experianced they are quite comparable if not better than some generic remaps.

At that price it beats most things

Got a specific address for them?

Hmmm. Looks like they sold out of those, they are older units but would have worked fine on the 130pd in the VRS.

Next best thing is this;

VW 1.4 1.9 2.0 & 2.5PD + 2.5 V6 TDi EXTRA POWER! on eBay, also Chips, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 04-May-08 22:43:56 BST)

I know this says VW but if you call them they can sort this.

Yep i got mine from their ebay store..... It was sold as for the Audi PD engines but you just tell them when you've bought it that it's for a Fabia vRS etc.... and they flash it before sending it out. You also still get the 30 day money back guarentee and also the full 3 year warranty with these units too.

I paid £199 for mine and the normal price at the time was £300-odd i think.

Cheers

Dave.

Looks good that! Dont know what I do on Eay but rarely find what I'm after :D

And once again, anybody had owt to do with Tandem Tuning boxes?

I'm running the new dragon "box" and i love it. I'm too tight to get a remap (at the mo.....wedding n all that!) but its definately a good bit of kit. Contact then 1st and get the correct one tho, as i ordered on and was told it was for models before 2004 (mine is an 05) Apart from that wee hiccup, i'm well happy! lol

just me wee 2p worth lol

Well I wouldn't recommend Dragon at all. If you order one and it works out OK, then I suppose fine. But if it doesn't work out, trying to get a refund is very difficult, despite the assurances on their website to the contrary.

The dragon didn't get on with my car at all, I fulfilled all the returns criteria to the letter and sent the unit back in March. Despite several phone calls and e-mails, and multiple promise of "It will be done today/tomorrow/this week" etc, I still haven't had my refund.

I am £425 down, and have nothing to show for it except the grief and frustration of not being able to get my money back.

That's really bad. Have a search on here - you may be able to find some other contact details for them other than the usual email ones...?
