Cut out, Dash Dies, Then ok again??

Featured Replies

Hi folks, new member here but i don't actually own a fabia. My Brother in law has one and he is having some trouble so he asked if i would help out.

A month or so ago he was driving along and his car cut out. At first he thought he had ran out of fuel but after 10 mins or so he tried the car again and it fired up. He drove home and thought nothing more about it.

Today a similar incident happened but he managed to tell me a few more details. When the car cut out this time the speedo and the rev counter completely died and everything shut off. IIRC the only light that came on was the battery light and it was flashing.

I wasn't sure if there was something wrong with the terminals or whatnot and i also suggested the immobiliser but i thought i would come on here to ask the experts.

The car is a Skoda Fabia VRs 54 plate

Any ideas?

Thanks

Scott

The dash panel contains the immobilisor.

Are the battery connections ok?

Sounds like a battery problem to me.

Alternator might not be charging.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm going to tell him to check the battery terminals. I'm pretty sure its not the actual battery itself, or the alternator, as after it has cut out he can start it again and there is pleanty of juice left to crank it.

Lets say for a second that it was the battery terminal. If the car cut out due to a bump or whatever, why wouldn't it fire back up again on its own? Would the immobiliser stop the car from starting itself up until the key has been removed and then put back in or something like that?

I did do a search on here and i found that some people have had similar incidents happen but they didn't post the conclusion.

Thanks again

Scott

Had a dash panel fail in this thread:

Yours doesn't seem to be giving the same symptoms (blank mileage displays). I would agree with VRStu, in that check the battery connections. If these prove to be OK, if the VRS is like the petrol there will be a X relay that supplies the power to the ECU, for what it costs (around £12) it may be worth replacing.

To do a more in depth diagnosis we would need details of any recorded fault codes from all of the cars systems.

Also check the body/engine earth connections. The reason for restarting and no problems can be because if a cable is pulled by shocks or torque, it loses good continuity. Once the car stops, the whole settles back and is fine. Used to be more of a problem with the old crimped connections bt can still occur. Please let us know conclusion.
