Hi My friend has a roomster I think it is a 2 litre diesel. Anyway he was going up a steep mountain and suddenly the engine just cut out as if the fuel had been turned off. So he left it for a few minutes and turned it over but it would not start. He repeated this several times but no luck. Anyway he was able to free wheel down and get turned. So he picked up some speed and tried to bump start it and it started and since then no problem. Anyone have any idea what this might have been caused by.

not sure but when I had a tuning box on my car, the engine would turn over and not start when the connector was not in properly. Perhaps worth a check, but I'd take it to the dealer to have a look at

How steep was the mountain ? Did it make it up 2nd attempt fine ?

How full was your tank, is it possible to be on such a slope with limited fuel that your tank intake was just sucking in air ?

Anyone know where the tank supply is and how it would effected by angle ?

I would be amazed unless it was so steep the car couldnt handle it - I could imagine it stalling but it should have restarted without 'load', i.e. just in neutral, regardless.

You'd have to be well into the red on the fuel gauge before I can imagine it would become a problem

TBH you will need to get the codes read to make any sense of it

My friend, it happened the same to me as I drove the road up for at least 7 times, today it happened again with my wife as she was driving to her job. On the repair shop they've change the egr valve(?); the problem remains the same. I think its a problem of turbo or motor (or something else, a defect of fabric). Good Luck.
