Opinions Please Tt225 Into An Octy ??

Featured Replies

I have found a complete TT 225 quatro in a breakers, been in a light prang but enough damage to total it & I can have first pickings of the car so question is, do I buy the complete Engine, Gearbox, Turbo ECU Wiring etc etc & pop it in the 4x4. I have been chatting to a couple of guys on the TT forum & it appers that with a simple map you get 270 ish bhp & a few simple mods will push it to about 290

I also understand the TT lump is stronger & will therefore be better at taking more bhp if required should a bigger Turbo etc appear at any time in the future.

Everybody I have spoken to says it will fit straight in subject to some new engine mounts, anyone know any different ??

Im still trying to get the cars mileage before going to look at it as I dont want a silly mileage car, its on a private plate but they think its either a 1999 or 2000 car.

Anyone any thoughts on this idea & also what do you think I should pay for the bits assuming say a max of 50000 miles on the car.

It will fit yes. The engine mounts on the TT engine will be the same.

By reading your post im assuming you have a 4x4..yes?

All gearchange cables etc are the same. What you will need to do is either get the dash cluster and key for the new car, or have the immobilizer removed from the engine ECU as it will be looking for a signal from the dash.

Other that that its a case of a bit of wiring to adapt (ABS etc also runs through engine ECU due to ESP and can data bus) and you have two intercoolers on the 225 as opposed to your one. These need linking together along the bottom of the radiator.

It is alot of work man hours wise (we've done three TT engines into MK4 Golfs now) it but a good way of producing good reliable power.

Good luck.

or...

You could stick a nice big turbo kit in the one you have :D

For not a lot of money you could have >300 on yours. Do you not like the idea of sticking with the reliable engine you have now + tuning it?

Of course 290 is a lot of hp (and a lot of fun) but with a TT engine, we would all know that you would be a hairdresser at heart

Big Turbo Kit is an idea that I have had for a while now but its finding one that is tried & tested & that will give reliability. Im looking to do the Cannonball again & dont want a weak car & as its now only 14 weeks to go I dont have a lot of testing time left.

If I go down the Turbo kit route I still need to fit a TT225 Gearbox, Clutch etc as the std 4x4 one is not strong enough & the ratio in top is too low. Several tuners have also recomended changing the rods if I go above 300 bhp wheras everyone seems to think the TT lump is safe at 350/360 so fitting the Turbo kit has more hidden costs

Then again, the only 1.8Ts I've known to blow up in due course are S3/TT blocks...

I guess reliability is going to always be a very hard thing to guarantee with a big turbo kit. I personally wouldn't risk going >300 without doing something with the internals. ...around 300 will prob be OK with std gearbox + a new clutch. If you want more then pistons, gearbox, diff etc.

Anymore ??

Well look at it like this:

300 brake turbo kit is going to cost you around

Dave, whos kit are you thinking of for 3000 fitted, I guess that dosent include for intercooler & exhaust.

With the Turbo kit I still need to fit a TT Gearbox, Clutch, Starter motor etc as the std Octy box isnt strong enough. So I will save that expense.

Only other possible snag is the Donor Vehicle is LHD although nobody who should know thinks that will be a problem.

If I decide to go ahead the next step will be to fire up the TT & check all is well before the Engine comes out
