Buying a modified Fabia?

Featured Replies

Hey,

I'm still looking around at Furbys and most that I encounter are chipped/modified. I'm a little nervous about buying a modded car, simply because I don't want to end up getting a car that has been excessively thrashed or abused.

As I said, most are chipped but they don't seem to have upgraded clutches ( from reading several posts here I've learned that it's pretty important). So could I be inheriting a problem car?

I guess I'm just looking for pointers on what to ask/look for when checking out modded cars. Am I just being a little too uptight about mods?

Cheers,

V

It's a fair concern and the last thing you want is a car that's been abused. I think in general, it's fair to say that most chipped cars will have been driven hard although that's not to say they haven't been looked after.

My main concerns would be how reputable the company who did the map were and I'd be looking for lots of receipts to see how much care had been taken over the car and maybe some dyno graphs to see how aggressive the map was. You'll get a feel talking to the owner and looking at the condition of the car about the kind of life the car has had.

When I went to sell mine, I was honest about it. It was mapped (AMD oneclick custom), it was fitted with a full Eibach pro kit, Jabba ARB, 312's with cross drills, decat and a few other bits. It was a sweet motor with all the right mods. It had also had a tough life having done 57k and several track sessions. However it had FSSH, oil changes every 5k and it wanted for nothing, I looked after it. If something broke, it was sorted no expense and it was even polished regularly!

All this was relfected in the price and if someone had bought it they would have had a very sorted 55 plate Furby for about £8k. As it happens no one wanted it, I stripped down, traded it in and sold the bits.

Someone bought it off the forecourt for £9k and has probably fitted half thoses bits back to it now

Decron - wise words and spot on! :D

Thanks for the replies guys. I agree with both of you. The thing that worries me about chipped machines is that they'll be chipped and not looked after properly, hence the possibility of handing on a car that'll cause me heartache.

But if, like Decron, it's been looked after that's grand. I do like the idea of an 'enhanced' Furby. Things like xenons, a mild chip and Octavia wheels do it for me, and to get those on a machine from the start will save me money and time/effort. I suppose I just need to be careful and observant really.

Thanks again lads. And the searh continues...
