Suggestions for centre speaker

Featured Replies

Well it looks like we'll finally be getting a plasma later this year. Probably one of the new Panasonic range either 37" or 42"..... What i need is a nice smallish slimline centre speaker to put in front / below it. I've got am old school Wharfdale centre at the minute that sits on top of the TV but that won't be an option and fancied saving a bit of space on the new TC unit we'll be getting etc.....

Anybody any suggestions???? It's only the centre speaker i'm after not a whole surround setup as my DTS/DD7.1 setup is still keeping me amused. ;)

Cheers

Dave.

Do you need black, silver, or other wood based colour? And are you after a new un or used?

KEF seem to be making some good speakers just now, best thing to do is buy a copy of What HiFi Sound + Vision and peruse the classifieds at the back. You can get some bargains from discontinued stock.

Try Richer Sounds as well, just up from Weston park Hospital, they're a friendly bunch (usually).

If you want a kef centre speaker pm me.I have one that i dont use.If you want a small center speaker you could use a kef egg.

I WAS looking at black or silver.... BUT....... I've been tempted by a used pair of MS906's in a cherry style wood so may blag my folks JPW Gold Monitors that they don't use anymore and are cherry and go for a cherry / ash centre too. Then sell my current black speakers. I've looked on Richers website and quite like the MS304 Avant centre as it's not too high so would fit nicely on a glass plasma stand/unit.

I'm a life long fan of Richers and have spent many a happy hour sat in the demo room with a group of mates trying various kit out.:o:rolleyes:

I may be able to sell you my kef centre Q95c and a pair or maybe 2 pairs of Q85s.

I would highly recommend kef as im on my second set of floorstanders, 1st Q35 then current Q5 in dark apple.

;)Coincidental thread this, I orered a 'Mordaunt Short 905i' (available in black and two other

natural wood finishes) only yesterday.

Don't know your budget, but I paid £99 inc delivery from a company called

'Laserline', very helpfull too. Plan to pair up with 914i front floor standers soon

If you want to see some pics of it incorporated in glass stand re-post tomorow or PM me

(ps my current yamaha small centre will be redundent after tomorow;))

What make are your front speakers - it may pay to buy a matching centre speaker.... I bought a set of floorstanders and auditioned a few centre speakers from other brands before plumping for the one which matched them as it sounded far better.

At the minute they are a 15 year old pair of sony's..... Hopefully to be replaced by a set of MS906's as mentioned in one of my previous posts.

I'd not be able to get a match for the sony's as a centre..... currently it's a wharfdale centre which has served me very well but is just too big for use under a plasma etc....

I’m a big fan of the Epos range (I've M22s and M5s) and they do a couple of nice centres at the moment. But as they are updating most of their current range, they might have some very good offers available at Superfi. Epos have beautiful wood finishes too and are available in many wood colours.

I have to admit I'm a fan of the Maudant Short range, Have the book shelf, floor standing and the centre speaker, I couldn't tell you which centre I have, bought it about 1year ago and move house late last year so it's still packed in its box. Think I paid about £100 for it. I'm very happy with it.

Well after lots of umming & ahhing it looks like we'll be keeping the current black speakers and just replacing the Wharfdale centre with something a little smaller but still black or possibly silver. It's going to have to be something that will fit onto a plasma unit glass shelf along with the sky box, DVD, CD, amp & xbox360 so will need to be not too high..... So far i've seen the MS304 which is only just over 10cm high and comes in silver so i'll see what it sounds like..... Anybody any experiance of them?????

MORDAUNT SHORT 304-AVANT-SIL at Richer Sounds - HI-FI Separates, Home Cinema, Speakers, MP3 DVD Portables, Plasma LCD, etc.

The decision behind keeping the existing speakers comes down to money really..... We were going to replace them for cherry units and replace the stands for silver one's as the mrs wants to decorate the living room and wanted the speakers & stands to not be black..... We do however have a black cast iron fireplace so the black stands and speakers don't really look out of place so when we get the plasma we'll get a black metal & smoked glass stand / unit rather than a chrome / clear glass stand and keep the black speaker stands..... plus save a good few hundred quid too.

Cheers

Dave.
