Mounting a fire extinguisher......

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Purchased myself 2x 1kg powder fire extinguishers to keep in the car incase the enevitable happened......

Anyways, just wondering if you guys could maybe suggest ways of mounting them in the boot? i have a rear strut brace in there so was either gonna zip tie the cage to them and have them mounted on there, or velcro them in each corner of the boot.......

Can anyone else suggest any other ways of mounting them in the boot?

Thanks in advance

Daniel

Think you have to fit them more solidly - bolted down. It'd be slightly painful to say the least if they come loose in the event of a sudden deceleration.

(mounting fire extinguishers in the boot of your car may get you into trouble in some places - public indecency I believe....) sorry couldnt help myself there.....

 well at least we got that joke out the way early on :D

What about possibly self tappers into the rear seats?

The Middle east spec skodas come with a fire-extinguisher already mounted by Skoda. Located in the boot right hand side, very solidly mounted.

Got a picture by any chance? I could possibly do it the boot side of the rear wheel arches on both sides...... but dont want to pretrude through the entire arch.......

If you intend travelling in Europe, certain countries (The Netherlands and Belgium at least ?) expect the fire-extinguisher to be readily accessible by the driver, which usually means under-seat or "transmission tunnel" mounting and Skoda / VAG have a bracket specifically for this, I think.

Might one perchance, having an idle moment in the cool of the even-time, peruse said device and obtaining the various numbers of the device and its attendant bracketry, and having committed to one's memory said numbered inscriptions, transscribe them herein for our collective edification? :)

Mine's stashed down by the LPG tank. Not worried about it being not all that accessible. When I NEED to get it, boy it will be got bloody fast.

Nope you have been more than helpfull :D thank you kind sir ;)

Oh actually 1 i suppose, hows the mount mounted? is it bolted into the wheel arch?

yes - it's bolted solidly into the wheel arch metal - to the left as you see it in the picture. Think there are 4 bolts or rivets holding it in.....

HTH and good luck with your mounting...

Cheers matey, you've been a star :D

Sounds like how my NOS bottle bracket is mounted. Four f*** off big bolts right through the chassis of the car. I remember having a spanner on the inside of my boot holding on to the bolt ends, while my mate was under my car doing up the nuts with a ratchet. :D Bit fiddly getting behind the wheelarch liner a bit too. :)

Where are the pics?

Basil posted them in post 4

FWIW the braket bas has comes with the extinguisher.

Any reason not to mount them under the front seats?

Yes, the retaining straps are well known for coming loose, they then come off the brackets and can roll under the pedals  this is not good, i think you will agree?

Mine is there and tbh I can't see any way how the retaining straps on my dealer supplied item could come loose, they are clamped on something chronic.

If that happened, it would be very not good but at the first sign of that I'd be going for not fit for purpose.

The retaining straps are easily undone by accident or sprung open an accident.

I have no problem with them in the passenger side (i personally think this is the best place for them) as they need to be accessed whilst exiting the car, not by going back to the car if it is on fire.

If however they are AFFF filled extinguishers then by all means bolt them in the boot, as AFFF wouldn't even put a fag out!!

Mine has a velcro strap on the NSR corner of the boot, which is wrapped round my extinguisher and spare oil bottle...

The "Fitting" guide showed in under the drivers seat for me.

Either way.
