Another (slightly different) tyre thread

Featured Replies

I'm sorry about any bad spelling that follows.

OK............

I have 2x Bridgestone Turanza's on the back. Both in good nick with loads of tread.

I have 2x Uniroyal rainsports on the front. 1 is at the limit, the other has say 6mm. I had to replace 1 a few months back after I hit a pothole, and the tyre developed a bulge.

My spare is a Bridgestone Turanza with 5-6mm on it.

I'd like to put the spare on with the decent uniroyal, use the worn as the spare, and replace the fronts as a pair when needed. But I'm told the car will pull if I do this.

If not I either have to go for another uniroyal, and hope that by the time the part used one is all used, there's little enough on the front that I can replace as a pair and not waste too much on getting rid of a tyre with tread still on it. Or, I could bin a perfectly good uniroyal on the front and get a new pair now. I don't mind paying the £70 for a new uniroyal, but don't really want to shell out 2x that for an new pair so I'd be going for something cheaper....

All opinions welcome.

Thanks.

I've run two different types on the front before, for exactly the same reasons..... it did pull to one side, but it wasn't a big issue, grip was still ok.... I replaced with a matched pair when they wore down, and it tracked straight again....

What about putting the good uniroyal on the spare, and getting another Turanza to put on with the existing one?

Its certainly less desireable to have differing tyres on the same axle...

I could put the good Uniroyal as the spare, but the spare turanza only has 5-6mm anyway. 6 mnths later I'd be doing this all again!

But, if I'm left with the situation where I have a part worn Turanza, I could it in as the spare then, and but a pair.....

get 2 new you tight git lol

Of course I'm tight. If I weren't, I'd have bought a VW

Ideally you want the same tread pattern and tread depth tyres on each axle (especially on the front), although if the car has been driving fine with 1.6mm on one tyre and 6mm on the other, then you might as well just pop the spare on and wear them down together. With a smaller difference between the two tyres it should drive better than it currently does.

Duplicate post....

Problem is Chris, is that the spare (and the back) is a Bridgestone Turanza, the Fronts are Uniroyal Rainsports..... I'm told that one's directional, and the other isn't...... and I'm told it's bad to mix and match.

Ah didn't realise that one was directional and one wasn't - in that case, I'd just get a new Uniroyal for the front and keep the spare as is. :D
