Coolant advice required

Featured Replies

Hi, Got in the car this morning and the coolant level indicator came on. Had a look and the level was just below the minimum, my question is do I go to Skoda dealer and get some coolant or Halfords and also which one should I get, is there a difference between them.

Thanks, Shaun

Normally, coolant level does not drop significantly. The first thing I'd want to know is why the level has dropped. I would look for leaks and/or get a leak/pressure test done immediately, if not sooner.

According to VAG handbooks the coolant in modern VAG vehicles should only be obtained from an 'authorised dealer' - whether this is the usual get-out or there is a difference, someone else may be able to tell you.

As said already really, the level should not drop as the system is sealed. Mine is 3 years old now and has never needed topping up. If the level was ok when you got the car then get the system checked for leaks.

Thanks for the info so far, I will get it checked for leaks next time it is in for a service and will keep an eye on it from now on. I had a faulty temperature/lambda sensor a week ago and as the garage didn't have one in stock I was driving the car in this state. Could this have caused more coolant than normal to be used or should I still have the same amount as it is a sealed unit?

I had a problem with the coolant level alarm last autumn. It seemed to happen only when the car was left out of the garage on a cold night. After running the car for a few seconds, then stopping and restarting, the alarm cleared.

On visual inspection, the coolant was low, but above the minimum mark on the expansion tank.

The dealer diagnosed "low coolant level", and simply topped it up to the max mark. The problem hasn't recurred (and the level hasn't dropped noticeably).

The correct VW-branded coolant is called 'Coolant Additive G12' - Part Nr: G 012 A8D A1. 1.5 litres costs me

yes must have g12/g12a
