Phone upgrade, which one?

Featured Replies

Well it's that time of the year again where I get a new toy to play with.

Problem is, I have an N95 and there isn't much apart from the N95 8GB thats any better, the 8GB is the obvous path but I'm bored of the N95 already and it isn't different enough.

The only 2 networks I can consider are 3 mobile or 02 as no other networks work where I live.

Anyone got any suggestions on which phone I should go for? prefer to stay with 3 as the mobile TV service is good, but I love the look/feel of the Apple iphone, however until it comes with a decent camera and 3g internet it's a definate no, any news on a better iphone being released anytime soon?

Other than that, the only phone I can see that matches most of the N95's camera etc is the LG Viewty, I've had LG before and liked it, but I'm not sure about the Viewty, especially as it's already been about for a while, anyone experienced it?

Any suggestions welcome, never been a Sony Erricson Fan but it's been a few years since my last and maybe they are better?

I looked at the N95 but in the end went for the HTC TyTn II. It’s a great phone, especially if you use your phone for work like I do. The touch Flo system works quite well, a bit like a cut down iphone.

i Have a Sony Ericsson K850i and it has a 5.0 Megapixel cam which is fantastic and the phone in general i think is superb

I have a nokia 6500 slide which is a good all-round phone.

A lad has what i'm sure is a Samsung at work, touch screen and slidey full qwerty keypad. Can't find it on the net anywhere unless i'm mistaken and it's not a Samsung.

Really smart phone though.

Well I'm looking for something that equals or betters the N95, The HTC Tytn II is not available on 3 or o2 so thats out, I dont really like the look of the K850i and I dont like the square direction button.

The 6500 is quite a step down from the N95 so thats out for me too.

I do like the W910i but it's only got a 2mp camera so again thats out.

There really is only a limited few phones that match the N95, and none of them have GPS (although it is cr@p so dont ever really use it), the LG Viewty again is one of a couple that match up, but I dont know if it's any good or not?

Looked at a couple of magazines in Tesco earlier, there are some nice phones due out (Garmin Nuviphone looks good among others!) but not till autumn and I cant wait that long!!

Just wish Apple would sort the iphone out with some decent specs as otherwise I loved it when I played in the shop!

Just stick with your current contract and wait until something you like comes around. Apart from the HTC phones, then nothing can currently match the N95 or the N95 8GB. Nokia have some good phones coming up, but none are available yet.

The N95 8GB, has a limiting factor for me, and thats the lack of an expansion slot so you are stuck with 8GB of storage. The orignal N95 on the other hand has a MicroSDHC compatible slot and has a rumoured max memory capacity of 32GB which is far in excell of the Black N95 8GB. Sandisk are currently testing a 12GB microsd card. Thats why for now, although I like the 8GB version, I'll stick with my original N95.

The N96 should be out in Q2/Q3 16gb of onboard memory, and a microSD slot :D

The Tytn is available just under a different name... is the O2 XDA Stellar!! Its a fantastic phone... i have the T-Mobile MDA Vario 3 which is exactly the same.

The gps is a world of difference from that of the N95!!!!!

The GPS on the htc is great (I might need to grovel to you with regards to a little favour there please Phil ;))

It synchronises superbly with my laptop and car too. As it turns out my car runs Microsoft software so I expect it to break sown soon and the blue screen of death to appear.

Yup... never fails to get a fix and only takes about 30 seconds at the most!

I think that little favor can be arranged!

Fancy that... a BMW powered by Bill Gates!!! lol

It only needs a mad Geordie Spinster at the wheel and it will be a total disaster ;)

I agree, as a phone its brilliant, as are the features. I am currently using it as a modem until I get my real internet back tomorrrow, and it gets a 1.1mb connection speed everytime, which is good for a phone network I think.

The downsides, it's my 3rd phone. Seems to have a mind of it's own on occasion, ie turns off, wont connect to the internet, or just locks up in general. Those foibles aside, i'll give my fresh 3rd phone a fair chance in the hope I was unlucky with the last 2. Both 3 and the courier said these seem to be the most reliable on the 3 network

I never knew they had removed the Micro SD slot on the 8GB version, thats that one definately out the window then!

Oh I didn't realise that, whats the other one like, the 02 XDA Orbit 2? is it not as good as the stellar? it looks a bit nicer, how much bigger are they than a normal phone?

I had a HTC phone before once, on Orange before I moved and didn't get on with Windows Mobile, it was annoyingly buggy, have they sorted it yet?

I had TyTn I too and it was poo, the Orange software and mobile 5 was really buggy. But the TyTn II has Mobile 6, more memory, and isn’t so full of Orange software. It is the phone the TyTn I should have been. The battery life isn’t so good though and you will struggle to get 2 days out of it if you use some of the more advance features.

Oh, does anyone know if you can watch TV on o2?

I can watch nickelodeon etc on 3, just wondering if o2 provide a similar service?

if i were you dude - id wait for the n96 to come out. crackin phone!

i work for a nokia service centre in merseyside so i knows the ins an outs a these things an id honestly wait for it.

I'm looking for new fone too - thinking of the N95 - currently got a K800i and although it's been a good fone it does hang and then had a few issues with it white screening which resulted in it being sent away twice.

theres the beauty with a nokia - most phone manufactures have to either be sent away to the networks service centres or binned, while with nokias either bring them into a service centre an we can do them within 2 hours to same day or sever probs -sent away - backi in 3 weeks fixed or exchanged. i would recomend the n82 aswell.

Always had nokias and will go back to them after the recent experiences.

excellent! dammit if only i worked commison based aswell.lol

wells if any one needs any advice or help in choosing a phone gimme a shout on here or pm me!

:D

I have both the XDA Stellar and the N95. The stellar is bigger, hevier, and more fiddly to use than the Nokia.

Problem with the N96 is it's not very different to the N95, it doesn't have a touch screen (it's the latest thing you know!) and it'll be about ten years before it's available on 3.

aye that is tru but il be honest - it aint touch screen - its just heat pads under the lcd.an theres more to go wrong with touch screen. my place is also a authorised samsung service centre aswel an we get loads a samsungs with this "touch screen" technology in because it doesnt work. thus why nokia dont apply it to there phones.

also the software probs found with most n series phones seems to be gettin sorted nows.

o own a n73 loaded with everything on it an with the usual sw upgrade every 2 or 3 months its worked like a dream.
