Power Steering dash Light

Featured Replies

Arrgh! Power steering went as I pulled away from my parents house, it just went incredibly heavy all of a sudden and I ****ed a curb.

I heard maybe a faulty battery could be the cause of this so checked mine and it says its fine, tommorow Im going to borrow a friends charger and give the battery a really good charge, if this doesnt work whats the worst case scenario and how much will it cost to fix?

Also I need a new tyre :( are Kwik-fit any good?

Excellent at separating you from large amounts of cash . Go somewhere else , anywhere............

Right, the trick here to play on Kwik-Fit, if they are your nearest tyre place, is to get a quote from Blackcircles - including the fitting bit and print it off - get Kwik-Fit to beat it after they have offered you their best price, you'll need to supply the printed quote though!

The owner of the tyre join at the top of my road says to never, ever, ever walk in to a tyre place and buy what they give you. Always ring around a few places first. Pretty much common sense but some people... :-)

And I believe if one tyre needs replacing you're supposed to replace the other one too. Gets expensive then doesn't it... And the power steering gone ouch.

WRT needing to change both tyres on the same axle if one fails etc, why not, if you have a same size steel spare, get this tyre if its new, fitted on one wheel and fit the next new tyre on the other wheel, lastly refitting the used but okay tyre on your spare steel. If you haven't got a same size steel spare, then maybe you should buy one - they will be very cheap - and then if you are on a long jouney then you can still run long distances without needing to worry about running on a "skinny".

Hi unkle. I can't see which car you have? On my old 1.4 8V, the power steering dropped out unexpectedly twice recently when it was very cold (though it hasn't when it's been cold before) and it's been OK since. If the light is still showing and it's "only" the sensor, it's not "too" expensive as those sensors do tend to go, but it could be other things unfortunately which are more costly. It's a piece of string really until you can identify the fault methinks.

Re tyres, I needed a new one recently and the garage said it would take two or three days to get one (mine are bog standard BTW), so I said to leave that and I'd get it changed at QwikFit in the morning. Lo and behold, the garage got one next morning... I've always found QwikFit very good quick and helpful myself for various things. Re tyres, all outlets seem to have an economy tyre and with little difference in price (give or take a fiver). Assuming all are fit for purpose, it's not really a direct comparison. If you are pricing up a particular brand, it'd be different of course.

You will know that I know nothing, so just my thoughts.

Get the battery load tested, check the alternator charge rate and check the PAS system fault codes.
