screeching after start up

Featured Replies

just wondered if anyone out there could help??

there a screech that comes after the engine starts but only lasts for a second if that... could it be the alternator, the starter motor of the fan belt? just wanted to gauge opinion before i take it to the main dealer and end up with a lighter wallet:(

Check the fan belt tension, it may be slipping and if so will make a screeching noise.

Usually screeching is from a slipping belt. A quick fix I was shown as a lad was a dab of hand degreaser (Gojo etc) under the belt. Stops it slipping from any oil deposits, fast and makes you look like a star, lol.

Proper job would be to inspect all the belts and adjust tension.

My quick fix, is talcum powder. If a light dusting of this on the fan belt stops it screeching you know that the tension needs adjusting. It does it after start-up because that is when the Alternator is under greatest load as it tops the battery up.

Are you sure its not the starter pinion sticking? this is very common, but not a huge problem.

Mine did this and it was the Alternator belt

HTH

My belt also screeched which lasted for about 10 secs or longer. I fixed this with a new belt, now iam only left with the starter screech which only lasts about 1 sec max.

If it only does it at startup, then I'd go with fanbelt.:)

I'm with Mart on this one.

I'd put a fiver on the starter motor.

ok cheers guys.. its only 1 of 2 things.. fanbelt or starter motor... is a fanbelt costly?:o

The VAG god has spoken ;).

A screech for less than a second can only be the starter, i would imagine.

My TDI used to screech for a second opon startup, I found the aircon clutch on the undertray at the next service.... Worth checking the compressor nut is nice and tight.

err foz.. i aint that technically minded... i'd end up making a hash of it...

i'd be happier if it was done professionally... even if i do have to pay for it...

Mine was only a very quick eek:)

It's a 2 minute job to change the fanbelt...you'd be mad to go to the main dealer...you not got any mates with spanners ????:eek:

i have this and dont think its a belt. i find if you start it but dont keep the key turned that little bit longer it does not do it which to me suggests the starter motor. give it a try. my friends honda ctr did the same and honda said that it was because he was releasing the key to early on start up

I start mine and i get a bit of a wurring noise - lasts half a second, think its the starter motor or the solenoid not releasing straight away... assuming it's a common thing as I've heard others in the VAG range do this..just ignore it!

blatantly the starter motor if it only does it on startup and lasts a second or two. mine does it too.

if it was the fanbelt it would do it at other times, like when on full lock parking with the lights on etc.

Would have thought screech would get worse in damp or wet conditions as well... like screeching louder and longer...Doesn't sound like fanbelt if this isn't happening

hmmmm ... well it DIDNT do it this morning when it started up.. but it did when i left work.. its like it only does (or should that be doesnt?!) it 1-2 times out of 10 starts....

anyway its booked into Dm Kieth on 1st april.. see what they say...

i'll try lnewland's suggestion and turn the key longer.... see if that works..

Good find cheeze, that clip is certainly the starter motor screech.
