Advice on remap

Featured Replies

Hi VRS owners

I dont know much abnout remapping, but a mate who is Skoda mech is starting to do it. He said he sends the engine map of and it gets tweaked then reinstalled.

Q, what types of maps are their? off shelf etc

Car has 97K on it, will it push it in to an early grave?

What sort of cost is involved ?

Thanks for any advice, cheers.

Remaps are always very well discussed here so you should find plenty to read.

97k isn't a major issue but you should be prepared for things to need changing as you are demanding more from the components.

..Ive just had a Revo generic map loaded by Dialynx Performance in Swindon,

The octy is my daily drive, and it has taken about 6 months of me talking myself into it, then talking myself out of it etc etc mainly due to being concerned with driveabiliy, fuel consumption etc etc.

I went for the Revo because Dialynx are 5 minutes away from me, and I have heard good things about them through other people and I didnt want to face a 2 hour drive should their be a problem later on down the line. However, I can only say that I am totally pleased with the revo, its nice and smooth doesnt seem to have any flat spots or anything like that, and the car is generally a much 'lazy-er' car to drive, lots more in gear grunt.

As you will probably be reading on other posts if you want to make the best use of other mods, or want something a bit different, then I think a custom map is the way to go.

I can only say good things about Dialynx, top class company...

Youve probably read the above a million and one times now in different posts, but to be honest, Im still buzzing everytime I drive the car and just HAD to tell someone!!!

Cheers

Rob

Youd better change your BHP figure too :)

Im not too sure on what it is now, as is wasnt 'roaded'

Whats the general consensus for a generic revo? Probably summat in the reigon of 200?

Rob

200ish I'd say :)

Are their loads of gerenic Maps?

If so is their any to avoid?

Cheers

Not aware of the ones to avoid but i can highly recommend DNA tuning generic map. I got it on my car for a year with no probs at all. The car is feels very strong and smooth. I test drove several VAG cars with other maps and it's all more or less similar. so make a decision with your location and budget in mind.

Nah, mine has less power and torque after a remap. According to some on here :rolleyes:

I now probably have the same bhp as a Fabia vRS :eek:

I am, however, happy with my slow, underpowered, remapped Octy vRS :thumbup:

What are the difference power and torque wise between off shelf and custom? Also cost wise? What have you all experienced fuel consumption wise?

If you're using your mate, then surely he will load you the one he gets back?

I dont know what you're actually asking us here.

What I'm asking is for advice on the types of remaps.

If their is more than one type of generic remap, which their is. Which one is best.

ie, if you bought a washer, which one gets the best recommendation, which are crap, ones that people have experienced problems with etc.

My mate is on a course to do this type of stuff, but i do not know the quality of the remap he will be programming, so not wanting to waste money on a remap that might not be as good as sugessted, i'm asking the forum for advice and their experinces.

Hoping to end up with a good quality installation at a reasonable price.

Cheers.

To use your words buying a remap is like buying a washer, some like one brand and others like another brand.

I can see what you want to know but as I posted above, by reading and searching you will get a feel for which remaps people prefer on which cars.

If you just want a remap and not any more mods then a generic map is more than adequate.

He wont be doing custom work then, and why does he need to go on a course? LOL I didnt go on a course when I purchased my mapping equipment - Sure I was shown how to use it etc etc, but a course?

Do you know who he is buying the maps through?

He may be on a course to learn how to remap as he doesn't know how to do it :)

Nothing wrong with learning something new is there

When i have seen mike remap it didnt seem like brain surgery. The hardest bit looked to be establishing a connection with the car. I would imagine if something goes wrong it would be a different story though.

He isnt doing custom work according to the O/P's first post.

The only course I know of in this country is by the EFI University. This is one I will be attending when they next run the UK Courses, but this doesnt mean I'll be able to remap cars! It will mean I have an understanding, but even then I wouldn't be doing custom work for people until I was 100% I could do it safely.

A course for just downloading and uploading predefined maps isnt necessary.

It isnt Rocket science at all, but then all I was doing was replacing the map with another one from my supplier. I didnt write the map myself (yet LOL)

The rocket science is in writing them and writing them so they don't kill the engine :D

would you trust an ebay advertised remapping course?

Do you have a link to one of these as I've never seen it advertised (but then I never look LOL). Would be nice to know who is running them.
