Impreza WRX v Golf GTi - Fifth Gear

Featured Replies

I've posted in this section as it's likely to interest Octy VRs owners given the similarities with the GTi.

I've just been watching last weeks Fifth Gear and VBH did rolling start timed laps in both of these and the Golf GTi was nearly 2 seconds quicker.

That's pretty impressive given the Impreza should in theory have 30bhp more and has a better power to weight ratio, not to mention 4WD.

Apparently in the Impreza you could get the power down earlier coming out of the corners but the GTi turned in better.

The Impreza hit a top speed on the straight of 120mph whereas the GTi only managed 110mph.

I wonder how the VRs would have faired against both of these? I suspect it would have been slightly behind the GTi but I wouldn't expect there to be any more than a second in it.

Thoughts?

Who knows if the Golf was mapped or not though?

Did/has the golf got DSG.

It would have been a difference story if the track had been wet.

Dave.

I'd have expected the GTi to be standard otherwise a flawed test. Would have been interesting to know what the GTi was putting out though as some 2.0T have been known to put out more (210+).

No - it was a manual.

Possibly, but it wasn't so we'll never know.

I don't know much about cars but it doesn't make sense to me. Would be interesting to see the discussion about losing to the golf on scoobynet

I've been following it................some severely dischuffed Scooby drivers :D:D:D

The WRX has always been the softer alternative compared to the STi but I can't help thinking that in its latest incarnation it's gone even softer still. Others may disagree. Also I don't like the hatch styling - they should have kept it as a saloon.

I think as a performance allrounder the Impreza would probably come out on top of the GTi but it would be interesting to compare it to an ED30 or an R32.

might b different if VBH could drive:D

Not saying that i could do better.:sofahide:

Was the test performed forwards or in reverse? ;)

Chris

Think this time it was forwards :D

Think this time it was forwards :D

Are to assume therefore that the VRs can beat the Impreza in reverse?

the power to weight is hardly better at only 14bhp/tonne higher and the WRX only has 5 gears opposed to the golfs 6, this could mean the golf is in the better gear more of the time.

So true - you just know the sort of noises she would make too :D

I also find this slightly strange as my last car was a Subaru Impreza Wrx on a 54 plate (blobeye). Before that had a Civic Type R, and when switching to a skoda, test drove a Golf GTI with and without the DSG box, as well as the Vrs fsi and Vrs Tdi. Went with the (Tdi in the end).

When test driving the Subaru, I also tried out a Seat Leon Cupra R with a Revo remap that had in the area of 270 bhp.

The reason I mention all of these other cars is that in my opinion the acceleration either in gear or from a standing start was far superior in the WRX. I know it was an older model, but power and torque are pretty much the same as the new hatch model, and it certainly felt quicker than the GTI's i drove.

However, after remapping the WRX, totally different beast! :D

Just been watching the video on YouTube and I must have been half asleep, as for some reason I thought the initial post was saying that the GTI was quicker in a straight line after a rolling start.

Having just watched the video, clearly that is not the case.

I think it shows what a well sorted chassis can do for a car, and that without one, loads more power means feckall. Would be interesting to see the last gen Impreza in the same race.

The answer is simple - girls can drive hairdressers' cars better than they can drive real cars. The only notable exceptions to this immutable law of nature are Sabine Schmidt and Jodie Kidd.

If VBH had been driving a white Ford Capri 1.6 she'd have beaten her own time in the Golf, especially if she had been going shopping.

VW offered her a shopping trip to Harrod's if the Golf won and they allowed her the WRX to drive in order to get there quicker.

So there, discussion over.

my two cars are a 57 plate vrs octavia,

and an 03 plate wrx subaru in bog standard trim,

and i have to say the subaru is absolutely way faster:)

Yes that's definitely settled it mate

I had a Subaru WRX and to be honest I am not surprised the Golf won this test.

The WRX is pi$$ poor for low to mid range torque whereas the Golf excells in this area. In a straght line and scooting around the odd roundabout the WRX will win but clearly the Golf is more suited to the constant low to mid range acceleration required for the track. The WRX was never designed to go around a track.

With the TFSi the torque peaks at 1800 rpm whereas the 2.5WRX peaks at 2800 rpm, probably due to a laggy turbo.

I bet she'd beat you in a race!
