Parts supplier?

Featured Replies

Need to get replacements for:

1. Air filter

2. Fuel Filter

3. Carbon Filter

Best parts supplier is..?

Also, what's the best way of disposing of the original bits? Particularly fuel filter!

Thanks in advance.

Your dealership would be the best parts supplier.

Your dealership would be the best parts supplier.

Why? Unless your worrying about warranty then there is no need and if your doing the work yourself then there is no warranty!

Any Local motorfactors can supply these parts at significantly less than the dealer. The fuel is about £17 and the oil is about £6.

By carbon filter do you mean Cabin pollen filter? They will do these too but you may find they have to order. Last one I bought for the Fabia was £14

As for disposal, you can take them to your local refuse centre and they will sort them out as with the oil and batteries. Some transfer centres have drums for them. Failing that stick them in a carrier bag and put them in the bin

As there were no details supplied with the OP about the car and whether it's in warranty or not, I thought suggesting the dealership would be best.

Hi - yep it's well out of warranty and I'm not one for main dealers anyway, thought I'd be able to pick up the parts online (reputable shops wanted). There's also Panks in Norwich, Eurocarparts and Rapid car parts but I've not yet used any of them.

Oil change happened Sat when the cambelt got replaced but the rest needs doing. Not sure I want to attack brake fluid without more experience, although I might be inclined to attack a coolant change myself as it doesn't look too difficult.

Just need to know if there's a really good recommended supplier out there, and what to do with the the expired parts / fluids really. MOT next Sat morning then I'll attack these things.

They changed the oil and not the filter  That's like changing your socks and putting wet shoes back on again.

No I meant they changed the oil filter but not the air or fuel filter.

Allow me to explain a little more - the log book has an error in that the dealership listed the car delivered in 03 - it wasn't it was delivered in 02. The first service stamp has it as 02. When Andy (the mechanic) mentioned that the log book said it (filters) didn't need doing as it was only five years old I then had to point out the error to which he basically said "D'oh" and they'd have to do the remaining bits a little later.

Hence I'm looking to save a bit of money and get the stuff sorted myself. £228 for cambelt replacement, oil change (using my oil) and oil filter replacement - could do with learning how to get things done myself really.

Fuel filter is supposed to be 40k but TBH it should get done a bit sooner as with te air filter.

To change the fuel filter just release the clips, pull the pipes off and pull the filter out. It will be full of diesel and I would suggest wrapping in newspaper and then a plastic bag. With the new one, it's best to fill the filter up with clean diesel or Forte (That will really clean it out!) and replace making sure as little air gets in the system as possible. Then run it up and it should be sorted.

Decron those prices from factors you quoted are about the same as genuine stuff!?

I dont know why people shy away from some dealers for parts as you know what your putting on, as far as quality goes...

I used to work for a Vauxhall dealer, and we had a spate of 2.2 petrol vectras running dry of oil in places due to non genuine filters been fitted, and bits of paper were coming off them and clogging the oil port for the chain, and drying it out.

Each to there own and all that though....

People shy away from dealers because they are generally more expensive and few and far between compared to motorfactors. My dealer charges £5.20 +vat for the oil filter and it's 12 miles away. The motorfactors me and my family have been using for 30 years charges £4.25 all in and it's a Fram (Sorry £6 was the price I just paid for a JTD filer). The fuel filter is £34 + vat compared to £24 all in for the VRS/PD 105 filter.

It's all about your personal situation and your own confidence. We are not always talking cars under warranty, we are talking 4 years + old. I wouldn't suggest that anyone who doesn't feel they have the confidence to walk into a place like such and come out with the correct, quality part does such but where do you learn? Where do you get the confidence?. I go to a great dealer and I know I can rely on them but I know what they are there for and won't buy a filter from them unless I have to, even for my own 6 month old car.

Your just as likely to get a defective piece of kit from dealer as you would from the motorfactors. I I have just had to replace the filter on my Roomster after 12k. The when I checked it I found zinc flakes from the can plating in the filter medium, I won't be fitting an OEM filter again!

No OEM on a Roomster, surely thats a void warranty situation if anything happens to go wrong and no genuine filter etc right?

Or am i missing something....

Like we have both said each to there own etc etc blah blah!

Genuine parts from a Skoda dealer come with a 12-month warranty from date of installation or sale.

And you can argue Block Exemption etc....But thats when Genuine parts are used....

It's a bit more complex than that.

I have actually sent the filter to a friend of mine who I used to work with at Fram. He has washed the particles out of the medium and is in the process of writing a lab report on it. They can sort it out then from that. All they will do is replace the filter which I may or may not fit  I needed the car working then and there. Dealer would have taken all day possibly longer which at the time wasn't acceptable. Ill pay my money and takes my chances.

I am not worried. This is my 4th pd and the only one I have had any trouble with is the one that was dealer serviced all it's life

Now this thread has been derailled far enough!

If your confident to do so then get the parts and save some cash, if your not then go and see your dealer.

Ordered Sun night (bank holiday Monday remember) from Eurocarparts..com and arrived today. Pollen filter is fitted (fiddly in the dark!), fuel and air filter I'll do Sat after MOT gets done.

Air filter £6.62

Fuel Filter £9.42 (list price £20.35!)

Pollen filter £9.40 (list price £16.38!)

Add VAT, delivery was free.

You do not have to use manufacturer supplied parts regardless of whether the car is in warranty or not. If you use non manufacturer parts and there is a problem, it will be up to you to prove that they are equivalent quality.

I think that genuine parts now have a two year warranty. Service items are like own brand supermarket food, not manufactured by the company just sold under their name.

Block Exemption?

Eurocarparts.com (added to bookmarks)

Its all personal preferance at the end of the day i think.

Id buy from dealers all day long.....

Check out your yellow pages, under Motor Factors , or Car Accessory dealers, ring them all with your car details, you may need the vin number, but usually the registration is good enough, they will tell you the price (probably plus vat) and if they have it in stock.... I found a £34 difference in the rear exhust box for my FABIA 1.9 SDI (across 5 Motor Factors incl Skoda)..... and they had it in stock too....
