VRS Diesel or Petrol

Featured Replies

Having been very happy and impressed with my VRs mk1 i am looking to purchase a new Octavia.

i use the car for work and do 25000 miles per year so my brain says diesel but my heart

says petrol....to me a diesels never sound as nice!

In the real world driving mix motorway and town driving I get just over 30mpg in my mk1 and expect the mk2 petrol to be about the same.... What mpg can I really expect from the diesel/.... im thinking late 30's.

Will it be worth waiting to 2009? ... what is this new engine I have heard about in other threads?

Comments and thoughts please!!

And why do skoda have to have the cream front on their otherwise great seats.... not at all practical with 3 young kids who love getting dirty!!!

What mpg can I really expect from the diesel.

I expect around the 40 mark.

I think the road tax may require consideration too. I love petrol cars but I think that everyone will go mad for diesels, especially the VAG 2.0 tdi

I do quite a lot of motorway driving , on a good run i can easy hit 48mpg sticking to the speed limits , not bad considering ithe cars only got 8k on the clock now .

Its very quiet too when crusing up & down the motorways , only time you can tell its an oil burner is when u first start it up (and obviously its not 200bhp) but its still quick :thumbup:

Yep mid to high 40's is possible on motorway cruises, even when using cruise control. Mine definately doesn't like going through stop start town driving as it will drop to low 30's.

I've had mine a year and still love it. Has plenty of go for me good at overtaking, and the tax isn't going crazy either.

Best I got was 53mpg on a run from Manchester to Kent. That was sticking to the speed limits though. Only noise I get is from suspected noisy rear wheel bearings, its only done 25K to. A trip to the dealer is in order I think !!

Ive just changed from a Mk1 to a Mk2 Diesel and seen my average mpg go from 32 to 47 on my daily commute.

What mpg can I really expect from the diesel?

Depends on how you drive, if you drive the diesel hard I would say around 35-40mpg, maybe slightly less. if you drive at a steady pace in traffic expect the MPG to be closer to 50 or slightly better. I dont own a vRS diesel but have a PD140 2.0 Estate, and can get 60MPG on my daily commute.

I switched from petrol, and halved my monthly fuel bill, and the road tax is a lot less as well.

The official figures for the PD170 are

Urban: 36.7

Extra Urban: 61.4

Combined: 49.6

I went for the petrol vrs, no other choice really, I like peformance. The only diesel I have ever owned is the Scalextric Audi R10tdi, and at the moment, thats as far as I'll go down that route!

My car is a luxury, so I dont really care about mpg, etc. Its one of my treats.

IMHO 40 - 42mpg is a good working average for a briskly driver vRS TDI. I have only ever got below 40mpg when belting it! i.e. Autobahn trip with 90 - 110+mph cruising or absolutely blasting it cross country :D  :D

The TFSI generally gives 10mpg less; taking comments from several threads of this nature over the past year.

Wait 'till 2009 for a TDI vRS? I don't see any particular point as the PD 170 engine used at present is pretty good, tried and tested. (VAG group have been using PD technology for nearly 10 years or so).

I changed my Mk 1 VRS for a Mk 2 TDI vrs last year. I have been very happy with the performance of the diesel and think it is easily as quick as my old Mk 1. It is not as quick, ultimately, as the Mk 2 petrol VRS but I think the diesel gives you more smiles as you drive. For me the petrol is a little too refined with no real shove in your back, like you get with the diesel, when you floor it. I regularly average between 42-46mpg on my commute to work (10 miles on motorway, A and B roads). The best I have got was 55mpg. In my Mk 1 I used to average 32-35mpg on my commute to work and got about 40 on a long run. I would recommend the diesel but you should try to test drive both and see what you prefer (one mans poison is another mans lunch!!!).

As far as waiting for the CR engine you could always try an A4 and see what the engine is like in that as i believe they have already converted to the CR engine. Then compare to the PD and again see which you prefer.

I have driven a audi a3 2.0TDi 140 on many occasions, also the leon 2.0 TDi 140. Both used to give a low of 36mpg and a high of 51mpg and both were quick. Im sure the Octy vRS 170 will be a lil quicker too.

But I just cant see it being as quick or as exciting to drive as my old Octy vRS mk1. I would be very suprised if it was as fast.

However the TDi is not far off and cheaper on tax, and cheaper to run. I'd prob go for the TDi if i was buying another one

With the high yearly milage I would go for the PD170. I think the diesel has more torque too. And as someone has already said in this thread the road tax would be cheaper too. If you can afford the extra fuel and tax though go for the petrol. If I had enough money I would have one of each so I would not have to make the choice, come on lottery ticket!
