Changing Tyres in Pairs?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've got a slow puncture on a rear tyre. It cannot be repaired as the two holes are about 5cm away from each other in the centre of the tyre and the local ATS said they are too close to repair. The tyre has approximately 4mm of tread and the tyre on the otherside has 4.5mm of tread.

Do people recommend changing tyres in pairs so I'll have around 8mm on each side or can I get away with having a new tyre on one side and 4.5mm of tread on the other?

I had the same thing a while back, as they were directional tyres I changed both. Not sure on the official line?

Plus if you change one then you'll forever be buying 1 tyre at a time for the rear?

change the pair but keep the good one for a spare tyre. if the same happens again youll have a part worn one to replace it with

yeah change it in pairs

if it had 7 or 8mm left on it youd probably be ok as long as you used a similar tread pattern but since the tread is low you should replace both

Best to do both really and as people say , keep the good as a spare.

Thanks everyone, will change both. There goes another few hundred down the drain :(

The spare already has a new tyre on it, and there's a part worn Avon in the garage lol. Will keep the other one as a spare anyway just in case.

In an ideal world, you should change both, but I doubt you'll have any probs if you just replace the punctured one :D

You would be alright with just one new if you've not got the money at the minute. But you've spent some money there, you and the car would be a lot happier with two nice new ones, good set of tyres makes all the difference to a car.

If the spare already has a new tyre then why not get 1 new tyre to replace the dead one, put the spare on the other side and put your part worn tyre in the boot as the spare. That way you only need to buy 1 tyre - assuming you don't have a space saver spare that is!

I had 3 different makes of tyre on my Corsa by the time I came to sell it haha.

Started off with 4 brand spanking new Toyo T1-S's, one rear got a puncture within a couple of weeks :( Stuck a Barum Bavrus on there as it was similar tread pattern.

Then same happened to one of the front ones just after I'd replaced them and forced to put a Pirelli P6000 on there.

I have four Michelin Pilot Sports on the car, the spare is a Kumho Exalto something or another  Otherwise I'd have done what you suggested

That's what i did.

It's not that bad

You can get decent replacements (Many threads....) around the £50-70 mark each.

I've used a few tyres but I love the Michelins. Just a shame they aren't cheap :thumbdwn:

It would be advisable to replace with a matching pair across the axle, however as it is on the rear it should not be that much of a problem if you dont, unless it starts to pull or feels uneasy at the back.

If you car is fitted with ESP 'all 4 wheels must be fitted with the same tyres in order to achieve problem-free operation of the ESP. Differing rolling circumferences of the tyres can lead to an undesirable reduction in engine output.'

I knew that applied to my Octavia 4X4 bit hadn't hoisted aboard that it applied to my Fabia vRs as well. I live and learn.

Same applies if it has straight foreward ABS and even normal traction control. But above very true if it has more complex ESP.

Tyre should be fine to repair...as long as the two plug patches dont overlap then all should be fine. We would do it and it would be done to a British Standard, ATS are conning you....

They said the repairs would overlap so they couldn't. The holes were pretty close together though

Ok, thats cool then.... we do two types of repair 3mm or 6mm, the 6mm patch is about the size of a ten pence piece and the 3mm a 5p....Repairs above 6mm are not reccomended.

Phil

I have Michelins all around already and having OCD means I'd want to keep them all the same  Seriously though, I've found them to be good tyres, suit my driving style and suspension setup really well  If I was replacing all four then I'd probably look at other tyres but for now I'd stick to Michelin Pilot Sports.

The spare is a different tyre :thumbdwn:
