A Friend recently bought the toyota shown in the vid, can't wait to show him this!

Interesting video!

Shame they didn't show the Haldex system as it would be good to see how quickly it reacts compared to the permanent AWD systems...

Chris

does look an interesting video, but I've no sound right now :thumbdwn:

Haldex seems to react pretty quick, especially with the uprated controller; I wouldn't have thought it's quite as quick as permanent AWD systems due to there being a little more going on :o

Thats pretty good that.. although to get the amount of control over the 4wd efficently you would need either 3 electronic diffs, or a electronic centre diff and good traction control (which is crude, because your not really doing the transmission any good if your trying to restrict an open diff by braking individual wheels

As they showed on the passat, that uses gen2 haldex, which can transfer 100% torque to the rear...

The old haldex (on the mk1 octy) can only do 40% iirc

Does 4motion make use of Haldex? I'd assumed it was permanent 4wd?

Chris

no.... as far as I remember, 4motion drives the front, but can distribute power to any wheels when the fronts slip.....

Chris

nope, 4motion is just VW's 4wd

It was torsen in the prev generation passat only (longitudinal engine) but now all of VW's models bar the polo are based on the golf 5 chassis so they are all haldex

Enjoyed that, very interesting.

Well not if you include the Phaeton and Touraeg they are torsen.

The gen 2 system also works a lot faster, requiring only 30% wheel slip as opposed to gen 1 which was 70% before drive is transmitted.
