I've just changed cars, the last one was fine, and i'd say about 5% lightly swirled since it was corrected last October, thats with washing once a week, so pretty confident in my wash technique, it's just the new one is swirled with lots of holograms too.

If you've got time and are only doing a couple of panels at a time then Davekg (I think thats his user name on Detailing World) did a test layer SRP with amazing results. I've layering it before and it made a huge difference to hiding the swirls.

Yep, he did indeed, thats where i got the idea of doing a panel or two at a time.

Was impressive wasnt it. I applied SRP the other week as was amazed at how much it covers up. Thast you some ******** I've got a key scratch all the way down one side of the car. SRP done a excellent job at hiding it. Only bit it couldn't touch was the part were it goes almost to the metal

A week should be long enough, but it should only need a very light polish if it's new paint, just to get rid of the buffing swirls.

Ta muchly Grumpy ! :)

Thanks again for all the input guys.

I've got a mammoth task ahead of me to get the Fabia swirl free by hand, but i'm confident it's gonna look ace when finished.

Moving onto the interior....

Any suggestions ?

send me a 20ml plastic bottle in the post with a postage paid envelope and I'll fill it with Autofresh concentrate to make up 500ml in a spray bottle.

:)

Interior try to borrow a Vax with the upholstery attachment and don't leave the car standing for weeks as it can take a while to dry out.

Also try the Autosmart (I think) brisk bio for any nasty stains.

Something else to ask is how much would somebody charge for a fully detail and paint correction. It might be £250, but then you wouldn't need to buy a lot of the equipment yourself and just a wax etc to keep on top of it.

I had a full detail on the Octavia, i have thought about just getting it done, but for my sins, i really want to tackle this myself.

Whats the Autofresh ? Nice air freshener ??

The interior isn't too bad, but the seats will need a good shampoo, so i may see if i can get a loan of a vax from somewhere.

Do you think a G220 would be a wise investment ?

Reasons for asking is, everyone seems to be raving about them, and their ease of use too.

Would i still be able to use the SRP etc ?

Or do i move up to proper machine polishes ?

If you buy a G220 I would ditch the SRP, it's a little old skool IMHO and buy some better polishes to use with the machine...............

I am by no means an expert but over the past months I have invested in a lot of different polishes and waxes and everything depends on the car it is being used on, colour, brand and amount of damage to the paint.

VAG paints are hard and so if you have a lot of correction needed then you will need good cutting polish and compounding pad.......

I have 3M polishes and pads, Megs polishes and pads, Sonus polishes and pads and Menz polishes and pads.................my favourite set up at the the moment is the Megs Burgandy Pad using Menz Intensive Polish followed by 3M Final Finish Waffle Pad and Menz Final Finish Polish........all of these are used on a UDM which is basically the same as the G220.......

I have found that the 3M polishes are very tempermental to heat but as is the Menz polsih, the Megs polishes are good but I find don't provide enough cut........

Like I say it all depends on the car really.........

See....all that just went straight over my head ! :D :D

Will need something that can remove pretty serious swirls, and then finishing from then on.

Obviously once it's had it's first correction, i wont be needing such a heavy cutting pad for maintanence i presume ?

I'm getting some samples of the 3M polishes for blending in a touch up so will let you know what I think. Will be working it by hand, but I can't afford the G220 just yet plus there are a few quality issues and I'd like to see where they go.

Re the autofresh, it's the autoglym air freshener. Quite nice me thinks and should suitably remove the Eau du Fat Knacker ;)

Autoperfection sell 100ml samples of the 3m compounds so I'd get some of them and have a play on a single panel. Say the duffed one :)

Sorry mate, didn't mean to go into too much depth................

Once you have corrected the car then really if your wash process is good enough then you will only need a Final Finish pass in the future to get rid of some minor swirls...............

If you are still not sure then I am happy to explain on the phone at any time just drop me a PM, or come along when I do a customers car and see what I am on about?

Yep, my duff panel will be my test ! :D

Especially once it's off the car, can play about with a few sections in the garage.

I cant really afford the G220 at the moment anyway, but i think long term it's going to pay for itself in time/end result.

Pity we couldn't buy a "regional" G220 and share it ! ;)

You know me well ! :P

Ok so whats a good wash process then?

I take it a bucket and sponge isn't good?

I've just ordered some stuff from Polished Bliss, but if I need to buy a new bucket and sponge, then I better get ordering again.

Add another bucket, plus a grit guard, and ditch the sponge for some good quality wash mitts, and you'll be on your way. :)

As Johnny50 has stated, you ideally need two buckets with grit guards and some quality wash mitts:

If you can then use some snow foam to dwell on the surface before you wash using the '2BM - 2 Bucket Method'..............

How would you rate the Zymol sponge ?

I noticed vxrmarc always uses one.

The Zymol Sponge is supposed to be really good but having not used it I can't comment but if vxrmarc uses it so it must be good...............to be fair the washmitt's I picture are only a couple of the ones I have, the better ones I have are Lambswool washmitts but I reserve those for my car...........:D

I still cant see what can be different about the zymol spnge to be honest !

I need to invest in some more wash mitts after i found all mine lying on the floor in the garage!!

Doh

I like the turtlewax one that looks like mini dreadlocks.

Not caused any scratching at all which is more than can be said for the sponge jokey who did a courtesy wash at a certain garage I won't be visiting again.

I still cant see what can be different about the zymol spnge to be honest !

The Zymol Sponge doesn't contain silicone which other sponges do have in them..........so I am led to believe............
