Oil leak

Featured Replies

I have had a litte oil leak on my Felly for a bit and saw it was coming from behind the cam cover. I didn't worry as it was reasonably small, however today it left a pool of oil about 1ft and 1/2 long, and 1/2 foot wide!

I am trying to upgrade (looking for an Octavia) and my garage has offered £700 trade in for my felly, however they haven't turned up an Octavia that I have wanted recently. So reluctantly I am taking it down there to have the leak looked at as it is getting quite bad, and my dad is getting annoyed about the mess its making on his drive!

Does anyone know what it might be? It appears to be coming from the lower rear pulley (towards the drivers side of the car at the bad of the engine), on the cam belt housing. The garage said they would have a look before they book it in (they are very busy at the mo) I don't want to spend much on it as I want to get rid of it - though I know £700 is an excellent trade in value on a Felly! Thanks for your replies guys.

I thought you all might be interested to the solution for this one. I took it down to the garage I use yesterday evening - and we started off by washing off all of the oil with a pressure washer and some solution the garage use to try and pin point the leak.

He then said take it for a thrash up the road - which I did ;) and came back 5 minutes later to see if we could see anything leaking. It turned out the oil was coming from out of the dipstick! The oil breather hose - comes out from the bottom of the engine at the back, and up to the top, to the throttle body housing, however this had been re-routed 2 or so years ago, for reasons I can't remember, so we reversed it back to how it was.

Revved the engine up for a few minutes and no more oil appeared. He washed all of the oil back off, and since then (touch wood), all ok and no leaks.

We were discussing why the garage would have changed the breather hose in the past, and they usually do it when the car is running badly - and causing issues with the throttle body. It seems ok at the moment, though I will see how it goes.

I got offered £700 for a 1999 T Reg Octy at my local dealers, to say the least I didn't take them up on it.

Also Glass' guide says £500 maximum on a Felly of that age.

Yes its a good deal (I have had a few cars from this garage in the past), I will probably go through with it. What I am being offered seems a lot better than glasses guide which is good :)

I have an oil leak from behind the cam belt cover could this be the same fault and is it easy to change?

Also there is water leaking out underneath as well

Mine's sprung oil leaks from various places :( I think a driveshaft oil seal needs replacing and an attempted bodge repair involving silicone sealant over the fuel pump blanking plate has failed so need to remove the sealant if I can.

Think I might stick to the cheapo 20w-50 as thicker and less likely to leak.

Have you got a 1.3 or a 1.6? Mine was a 1.6 - we had the dipstick out of its holder and when the engine revved you could see the oil rise up out of the dipstick housing! The garage said it was due to the breather and when we looked at the hose it had been disconnected. Once it was reconnected it was fine and didn't leak.

I had leaks on other places such as behind the cam cover (at the top of the engine) which was done when the cambelt was changed. If you have water leaking behind the cam cover it sounds like it maybe related to the water pump which I think is on one of the pulleys that operate by the cam belt.

I hope some of this information is of some use - I am no expert and I m sure one of the wiser members will be along to help you soon!
