car radio aerial repair

Featured Replies

Fabia 1.9 sdi 2001 Y reg..... the car radio aerial has been vandalised, and the screw thread on the bottom, also has the "socket" screwed on to it.... which has "disconnected" from the lead .... hence very poor radio reception.... I need to "get at" the end of the lead that is broken (inside the rubber base) so I can solder the "screw socket" back together and make the connection good again.... How do I access the base of the aerial to effect this repair?

Thanks....

Remove the aerial base and I think there is a screw underneath that holds it together. You may be better off replacing the complete aerial, around £30.

So, do I have to climb on the roof to get at the screw? Is it inside the rubber base, presumably holding it down to the roof? Is it a Philips (cross slot) or a star shape head?

Any other help you can give?

You need to remove the base, to do this drop the headlining down and undo the 22mm nut that secures it to the roof skin.

How easy is that to do? Have seen other posts where you just pull the rubber seals away, and then the headlining comes down..... Is it really that easy? I probably won`t need to take it all the way down, I presume....

Did this a few weeks ago, remove plastic trim above the rear window (pull hard where tabs located) & you can pull the rear of the headlining down just enough to get a long spanner onto the nut. It will probably crease the headlining a bit, but this does disappear after a bit. The large nut is the only thing which holds the arial assembly in place. There is not much (any!) slack on the arial lead which runs underneath the headlining so you need to get your arm in there to connect it.

Also,

its easier with 2 people, otherwise you could end up scratching the paint.
