Excessive Fuel consumption TDi

Featured Replies

75 miles on £20 of diesel

The car has used all this and just such little mileage WTF !! It had its 40000 service 2000 miles ago and everything was changed the MAF was also changed at 30000 but all of a sudden now i get intermittent loss of boost and no power and its drinking diesel like f*ck(no leaks)The smell of fumes outside the car is really bad but there is no blowing from anywhere. Its holding back all the time.It doesn,t go into limp mode.It revs freely to Redline too but when you put your foot down it just gives a deep throaty noise. The turbo is spooling with no bad noises so iam just stuck on what the hell it can be.Any help would be greatly appreciated:thumbup:

Stuck in a cold start mode I think. Well that or a faulty injector is just spraying diesel non-stop.

Well it's either running very rich or leaking from somewhere!

Are you sure nobody has drilled your tank and is nicking it (half kidding).

I read on another forum if the timing is way out these engines can still run but with dreadful fuel consumption - might be worth checking.

Other wise as Ken says suspect injector fault, MAF, coolant temp. sensor, air filter blocked, lambda probe(s) - if these have them??? Have you had any error codes read?

A derv doesn't fun rich as such.

You checked your fuel filter isn't leaking and all the pipes to it are not leaking. Also what about any leak off pipes (are there any on the PD140)

Is the idle really really rough? If not then I'd rule out the over active injector as that is a **** load of fuel and sounds like a proper leak.

Are the fumes, derv or combustion smelling. If derv I'd check the derv tank out too just incase.

A derv doesn't fun rich as such.

It's obviously overfueling (running rich) or losing diesel somewhere else!

Cheers for the replies.

Tonight put in £10 of diesel and done a total of 42 miles:eek:

The fumes smell is combusted diesel very rich smelling(smoke)There are no leaks at all from anywhere. It doesn,t even smoke when i boot it--weird.Before the problem happened my idle was unbalanced but with this problem its smoother(probally because so much derv going in)

The air filter is new and the diesel filter is new after its 40K service>The MAF was changed at 30K,i wonder if its this again? they are prone for it so i read.Iam gonna have to take it to Meadens to sort out before i get drained of cash in this 1.9 V12 engine!!!

Did meadens use Jubilee clips on the fuel filter?

The with a derv is, that if you put too much fuel in you will quell the explosion and as such the engine will run rough as f**k due to a lack of combustion in a single cylinder.

You could be very unlucky and have one injector putting in miles too much and another putting in nowhere near enough that cancel but I'd be quite surprised.

Let us know what comes from talking to meadens.

Possibly taken on some bad fuel / water and some s** so that one injector is not working so good, = lack of power, then some flooding by the pump as it will still push out the same amount of fuel. Get injectors checked and filters.

Thanks again guys for the advice. Its going into Meadens Skoda tommorow afternoon. Will post results of findings.

Just got back from Dealer. They run a full diagnostics on the car and NO fault codes came up anywhere:eek:

They "seem" to think it might be the MAF again so have ordered one for Friday. So only 11000 miles from last MAF.Isn,t that a bit soon? I hope it cures this problem, will have to wait and see otherwise i will need my own personal fuel pump at my local garage:rofl:

I trust meadens, but if there isn't a light then surely the MAF can't be out enough to use £20 in 75 miles.

call £20 18L, so that is 4.1 Miles/L or about 19MPG

Yeah i know thats what i actually got from £20 of diesel so fingers crossed its the MAF(again). They said it will need to go back on the machine after for some reason.I didn,t think it was neccasary after fitting a MAF?

I think what they might be trying is fit a new MAF and check the fuelling isn't high post MAF change maybe?

  • Author

Took in to Meadens yesterday had new MAF fitted and now its even worse than before:mad:No throttle response and pedal is clicking/notchy feeling under foot when "trying" to accelerate.Used to just wiggle your toes and that would be very responsive on pedal but now i have to pushmy foot hard to the floor to make the heap move.Going back to Meadens on tuesday now for the 6th time for the same thing.Would all these ridiculous symptons possibly be the throttle position switch? Its been on there machine god knows how many times now and never shows any faults/codes.

  • Author

Tonight the fuel consumption has come back but iam left with a gutless engine that when it decides to give me boost it splutters on acceleration:mad: and is jerky in action and lumpy idling after.EGR maybe?

Everyday is a differerent story with this car.I have now lost all faith in it.God just to think that almost 70% of taxis in Bournemouth are Skodas:eek: poor guys unlucky them:finger:

Sounds like there is a pedal issue, its pretty easy to check if the pot is knackered with diagnostic equipment. You can scope both tracks with the DSO.

Needs some through diagnosis and not just a fault code check.

  • Author

Well it never brings up any codes when they check it every time. Its in on tuesday again i will need to explain to the service manager all these mile long symptons as i told him before that there is more to an engine than its computer.I have been driving around all night tonight with my foot buried to the floor to make it go and that is bad news because before even quarter way down was too much power. It just grunts low down and vibrates like f*ck now when moving but doesn,t go into limp mode. The turbo is spooling up occasionaly but not fully i think.Oh well just see what happens at the dealers.

I think Ross has a point (as he well should, he's a qualified, and d@mn good, Vw mechanic).

Most of the private hire cars in Glasgow, and a fair few of the taxis in Dumbarton, are Skodas, mostly Octy A4s, and some Superbs. Just about none of the drivers I've talked to up there have had anything like the issues you and JohnJohn Healey have both reported, but I suspect that's partly down to good local dealers.

Thats very true Ken and thanks for the reports.

Upto 30000miles all was well until i took it to a Skoda dealer(name and shame) called WESTOVER SKODA.After i picked it up from there after its service is when it all started. So basically iam using Meadens Skoda who are great but are having trouble untying all this mess that Westover have made. Now at 42000 miles the car is so lame and different nothing like previous.

Westover Skoda have never been able to fix my turbo issues, and tell me it is all working fine, when it obviously isn't. Am I fan of Westover Skoda... definately not.

Well it never brings up any codes when they check it every time.

There is more to diagnosis than checking fault codes. Measured value blocks can tell you what boost is being made (if any) throttle position, temperature, crank signals etc etc etc. There will be something out of tolerance somewhere if the car is running that bad.

  • Author

Appreciate a voice of experience thankyou:thumbup: will see what they can do later today and i agree there is more to it than fault codes.

I know this doesn't help greatly but I'm a great believer in "if it ain't broke - don't fix it". I don't let any dealer anywhere near my car unless I can help it. My 130PD has now covered 80K - same exhaust, battery and brakes. All I've ever done in that time is change the oil and filters . . . MYSELF!!!!! The car is easily capable of 60mpg on a run.

Tough luck mate - hope you get it sorted

Went into dealers yesterday. They looked at car for 3 hours whilst i was busy looking at the VRs models for sale outside. They showed me pages and pages of print outs from the machine. They had done every possible check to it which included what they called "block tests".Every test came back as normal. They rechecked the new MAF but was ok but they did find a "slight" kink in a small vacum hose which they have realigned. They have told me they cannot really do anything else and for me to see what happens.I will just have to see how it goes then............................

And to top it all the sales dept have only offered me £5250 for the car:eek: Ipaid £10400 for this b*tch 22 months ago.
