Brakes of choice for vRS

Featured Replies

Guys, I'm thinking of upgrading the brakes on my vRS estate and I'm wondering what to go for. For cost reasons I'm thinking of staying within the VAG range and have looked at the Leon Cupra R Brembos for front and rear, what do you think???

And..... will they fit under my standard 16" spiders??? If not willthey fit under 17" spiders???

Cheers, Rob

Hi there IMHO I would stick with the standard discs ,Mintex I think they were good enough for plod:D. Id only go for Brembo/AP Racing/Tarox etc if your going to run big bhp so save your money:thumbup:

Brembo's in theory should fit under 16" wheels as they're only 308mm discs. Could be expensive though, even as standard equipment!

is there any advantage of the LCR brembos over the 312mm setup a vrs has?

Yes.

The LCR uses 4mm smaller discs but has 4 pot Brembo callipers.

Standard vRS are a gnats c*ck bigger but use single pot sliding callipers, still very effective however!

Stick with the current set up and go with DS2500 pads and if your feeling flush G88 discs with some good fluid the difference will be what your looking for i reckon

I would agree with the stock brake idea unless you're looking at doing track days which are particularly hard on the brakes. I picked up my vRS with mildly warped front discs and pretty good thickness front pads and the performance was no more than adequate. They replaced them with 100% stock discs and pads under warranty and after a full bedding in procedure, 1000 miles later they can get the ABS cutting in in the dry. Now I will freely admit that those are only pirelli P7's but I have a lot of experience of different tyres across various tyres and know how these react under given situations compared to something more performance orientated. Obviously with a high performance tyre the grip levels will be increased and therefore the ABS will no longer trigger in the dry but the biggest factor is how you look after your brakes. So many people forget how important bedding pads in is in the process of extracting max performance. I've been in a fair number of WRX's over the last few years and the stock VRS brakes kill them every time. The STi brakes are a different matter but for stock brakes the vRS ones are damn good. Replace the discs, fit something like DS2500 pads and refresh the fluid - that should really improve your brakes.

I must admit that I had a go of a friends Fiesta Turbo some years ago and that he'd fitted the tarox G88 discs to that with mintex pads. Must say that I wasn't impressed at all, and he said it wasn't much better than the standard he'd just removed. They did improve after a decent amount of bedding in time but not enough to buy them over standard discs and DS2000s at the time.

I originally asked about the brembos as I had them on my old STi and they were great with standard discs/pads. Felt really sharp and didn't fade until a good press at 100+mph. But thanks for the comments about saving money if I'm not running big power. I'm glad you didn't all say 'yeah go for it', I respect the fact that you feel that standard brakes are adequate.

Any other suggestions other than tarox for discs to match the DS2500s?

Cheers all
