Dave aka shifty! Your car still not starting nice?

Featured Replies

because it's not your nozzles doing it! ;)

Mine was like yours but now I have a fresh set of glowplugs. Even with the R783 injectors she starts right on the button. If I were you I'd renew all your glowplugs - they're relatively inexpensive

The above advice applies to all TDI owners who are experiencing difficult starting issues, but then runs fine after 10 to 15 seconds. :)

Thanks Jason :) I'll get some ordered. Why would this problem suddenly appear when the uprated nozzles were fitted? They couldnt cope with the extra fuel you think?

Extra fuel quells the combustion as it isn't warm enough to burn properly under compression.

Basically if it is your glow plugs they were just getting hot enough to allow the stock amount of fuel to ignite under compression.

The extra fuel from the new injectors will lower the temperature in the chamber and so the heat from the glow plugs is insufficient to get good ignition.

New plugs will glow hotter and as such will hopefully sort this.

Jase - any chance of you posting a quick and dirty (!) DIY guide with some pics?

all that will help but the problem is the injector scaling in the ecu file...it needs altering to suit the bigger injectors...exactly the same way you would have to do a petrol 1.8t with the wrong injectors

Agreed if you put less fuel in at start up and idle then you might be able to cope better with starting, however when your injectors are double flow rate there is only so little fuel you can inject.

Thank you Richard. It's also smoky on idle, very smoky - so your explanation makes perfect sense.

Mine's not really smoking at all on idle. Sounds like something isn't quite right. The exhaust note at tickover is ever so slightly different, but not much.
