1st gear wheel hop / judder

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Lately i've been getting pretty violent wheel hop if I give it some go in 1st gear...

First off why does this happen?

Secondly what can be done to prevent it happening?

Powerflex dogbone mount bush!

No its the dog bone engine mount around £20. Thats the one you want

"Front Engine Mount Dog Bone 1 per car (each)"

That? :)

Are these hard to fit, I assuming yes. (Especially with my limited equipment).

Have you checked the wishbone bushes?

When mine went it used to judder and it wasn't even remapped then.

I thought the dog bone mount just helped with a slicker gear change?

Thats the one not to bad to fit iirc as long as you can get under the car ramp/stands

Not sure what to check for really mate, any tips? :)

I have been getting a little bit of "clicking" when going slow now and then...

Could be possible then!

My wishbones were spotted as knackered by a tyre fitter when I pulled up in his bay. Roll slowly and then jam on the brakes sharp and the whole wheel moves back. Obvioulsy you need a mate to watch the wheel movement.

Other than that jack or ramp it and get a crow bar or something similar and see if you can get it to move.

HTH:)

You could see the splits in the wishbone bushes on mine .

Its the rear ones on the front wishbones that usually go.

I had brake judder when one of mine was shot, replaced them all with super-pro ones.

Ditto....quite an easy DIY job to do as well and much better than the powerflex ones which have been known to pop out

Does anyone have a link on where to buy these from please? I have all the signs plus knock knocking when ever i hit a lump bump or pothole.

Another thanks to a fellow Milton Keynes vRS owner:thumbup:

Are you sure that this isn't just the equivelant of axle tramp on a RWD car? Mine does it in the dry if you floor it in first from 5-10 miles an hour. In my case it's just hard compound tyres grip hopping on the road and the damper not being able to contain the motion.

I agree with Fatty - dead easy to fit. Jack the car, insert axle stands, Undo Two bolts, replace dogbone thingy, insert bolts, un-jack the car!! :)

a bit of a dunce question now. Is there a place to Jack the front of the car up in one go then put the axel stands under the sides somewhere?

I only ask as I've change jobs and spend alot more time driving shorter journeys with the family onboard and they are still complaining about the noise mine makes and I was going to see if I could find a softer mount and swap it over myself.

I do have a halfrauds 2tonne trolley jack and 2 axel stands but wouldn't know what part of the car to put the stands under either. ( I know they are called axel stands for a reason but where should I put them)

Nice one, thanks guys.

My car is going in for a service in like 2 months so might even ask them how much it'll be to fit it.

:)

no amount of bush changing will "solve" the problem, although uprating the wishbone bushes and dogbone bush as suggested will go a long way to improving it.

The problem is simply too much torque for gay front wheel drive and the tyres have no chance of keeping up.

I've changed all the bushes and have Bridgestone RE070 tyres on the front which are vastly better than previous setup with far better traction, but once you overcome the mechanical grip of the tyres everything still jumps about in first gear

Its actually the front subframe flexing that causes wheel hop which is why the audi TT had special braces fitted. Uprating the engine dogbone bush helps support the subframe reducing this flex but will not eliminate it. As this bush bolts derectly onto the subframe it gains support from the engine/gearbox mounts. Well worth doing IMAO.

Found a linky for you

Beware the confusion in this thread regarding rear subframe. The braces are for the REAR OF THE FRONT SUBFRAME!!

I didn't go to this extent as I found the Powerflex dogbone mount made a good enough improvement and had to be replaced following my remap anyway to prevent my turbo downpipe snapping.
