Got an interesting MPG Reading via Maxidot Today. doing 60mph down the Road and got 198MPG!! Is my Octavia the most economical Diesel on the planet?

I am guessing this is not accurate ;-) whats the most accurate MPG? I have two to pick from.

the one which stays more or less static and changes slowly, is the average mpg of the journey and is the more reliable of the two (it also has a tiny 1 at the side of the reading, if you press the reset button on the bottom of the stalk lightly it will swap to the average mpg over the trip counter milage and shows a tiny 2).

The one that fluctuates every second or so is the mpg at that moment in time.

Presumably you were on instant mileage readout? In which case you were very light on the loud pedal. There are two mpg readouts in setting 2 - the first is instant readings, the second is longer-term - I think it resets every 1,000 miles or so, but others will correct me. Press the button under the stalk for reading 1 and you will get the real long-term readout.

my vRS seems to have an instantaneous screen and two mpgs readouts, 1) i think resests every trip and 2) just keeps going and going

The longterm average mpg resets every 1oohrs.

Slip it into neutral (not recommended or legal obviously) and you will get similar readings for the snapshot MPG at that moment.

you have no.1 which is for that trip (resets after 2 hour break of no driving). no.2 which is long term and resets after 99 hours or something like that (i reset this one after each refill). and you also have the instant one which shows real time and this can flutulate like anything as soon as you take your foot off the gas it goes up till it turns to dashes then a very low reading when you boot it.

As someone already noted, that's probably the instant reading. It really should read "infinite", because when you use standard measurements, you get 0.0 l / 100 km. That's because during engine braking, no fuel is consumed whatsoever.

OTOH, when accelerating from stand-still, the l / 100 km reading can get very high, as you are barely moving. I've seen readings well over 50 l / 100 km, less than 5 mpg.
