How much oil does a 1.416v engine use?

On the way from Amesbury the engine management light and the engine power light lit up on my cousins Fabia.

We pulled into a services, turned the car off, waited a bit, fired it up and just the engine management light lit up.

We left it for about 20 minutes. Fired the engine up and the management light didnt light up this time.

We checked the oil and the dipstick was at the low mark. (When the car was bought it was just under max at the start of the month)

So we stuck in a litre of oil to bring it back to just under the max mark.

And all was OK.

Was a bit of a hairy moment for my cousin as it's his first car and almost called out Green Flag.

So what is the oil consumption like on those engines?

Poor , if all I read on here is true! Theres been lots of threads about this , especially if its an AUB (or AUA if its an auto) engine , they seem to have a thirst for oil , and some of them have piston ring problems. I reckon if you done a search for 'Fabia 16V piston Rings' , there'd be plenty of reading to catch up on!

I've had mine since June. When I got it, the oil was at the top of the marker. It is now about 2mm lower. In other words, it uses fucl< all. I think the 16v engine only really uses oil if there's something wrong. Mine is an 04 though, so has the more reliable later engine (which supposedly is less likely to suffer from piston ring problems - touch wood).

I'll get my cousin to check his oil before and after every major trip.

My 1.6 hardly uses any.

My sisters 1l 16v Micra uses some but not that much.

Service time for that car soon.

Personally I'd ask him to check it weekly , or fortnightly , just in case! A litre of oil is a lot cheaper than a new engine!

AUA also comes with a manual box ;)

But yeah both the AUB and AUA can drink a bit.

Im guessing AUA is the 75PS 16V , so the 1.4 Sport model?

Yeah it is, however is was also available in non Sport guise.

I've had an AUB for just over 3 years. When we bought it, it was 5 years old and had 48k on the clock, with a patchy service history. It had started life as a VAG demo car, so I guess it would have well and truly thrashed - first service wasn't done until 13K, at about 14 months old. I had no experince of VAG cars and thought that the oil consumption was a little high when we got it, I was topping it up every 500 miles or so with about a pint. I gave it a full service and used a flushing oil before the oil change - the oil did seem particularly dirty and in poor condition. I have since changed the oil (halfrauds 10/40 semi) every 5k miles. I am an old fashioned mechanical engineer, and simply do not believe that such a small capacity engine should go for 10k miles between changes. The car now uses very little oil - less than a pint every 5k miles, so I have a theory about the piston rings. I suspect that the oil control rings get gummed up and do not hold the oil in place for the piston rings, this will happen on any engine with extended oil changes. Over time, the piston rings will be subject to excessive wear as they are not receiving the oil that they should. I cannot think of any other reason why my oil consumption has improved so much. The car has now done almost 75k, and I will be doing another engine flush in the not too distant future. MAKE SURE you follow the instructions on the tin if you decide to do it, do not run the engine under any load. Another major factor is the crankcase vent system - this seems particularly prone to blocking with condensation gunge, I clean mine out every 10k miles.

One bit of advice I would give to anyone checking their oil level is, to make sure you remove, wipe then refit the dipstick before removing it again and looking at the stick level. This is certainly true of the BBY engine in my wife's Polo - I'd never seen that before, in all previous cars you could always trust the settled level on the dipstick to be true! One further comment on engine "quick and easy flushing", is, you can use Comma EasiFlush and run the car, ie use it for about 100 miles before dropping the oil out. Okay, you should not hammer the engine especially while this stuff is in it (makes good sense), I "believe" it gives the complete system a better chance of benefitting from this sort of "quick and easy flush" - I'm sure that using these easy flush preparations is not really all that essential if you use fully synthetic oils and keep short or stop/start journeys down to the absolute minimum, but I just like to do what ever it takes to keep the internals of the lub system clean. I used this stuff once a year for 75,000 miles on a 1991MY CAV GSI 4X4 and a 1994 Fiesta 1.6SI for 90,000 miles and both seemed to be extremely clean - well in the cam chest area - of course it could be that when I compare that pair with my previous pair of cars then you could say that car have come on in leaps and bounds - so that was the real reason.
