Kit car donor yes or no !!

Featured Replies

You want a MK1 XR2 1.6 crossflow engine with a pair of Weber 40DCOE,s on.

Very quick in one of those and a beautiful sound from sidedrafts....ahh those were the days:rofl:

I think Rover K Series engines are popular for these sorts of cars as well

Head Gaskets on standby:D

I agree that a ford V6 will be too heavy. Something light, 4 cylinder, and revvy is required....

Wouldn't recommend a K Series to anyone, unless you like changing the head gasket.

That is actually a very good choice if you can find one, and afford the carbs.

Proper traditionalist type engine and as mentioned, a proper noise:thumbup:

the ford kent engines are rare as rocking horse doo now...

Morgan used the Fiat twin cam for a very short while, so perhaps that would be easier to source. I loved my 130TC Abarth engine and I guess there must be a few RWD versions of Fiats still around (well the oily bits if not the bodywork). Mirafiori 131 etc

Oh yeah i forget the Fiat twin cam what a nice engine that was:thumbup: still with twin 40,s would be excellent.

The K Series is actually a very good engine! Just people don't look after them properly they just need a lot of TLC.

It's a good engine concept poorly built and badly developed. It's light and powerful, but as per usual, BL/Rover f***ked it up. AIUI it's better with a later modified gasket, but you really shouldn't have to give a modern engine loads of TLC.

I'll wager most of the engines have already found their way into kit cars and conversions. The cars will have returned to nature by now...

Your probably right :P But you have to admit.. the k series running on song is a nice little beast!

Yes. It could have been a real winner.

The body work returned to nature a you drove it out of the showroom. My Beta Coupe and Abarth both suffered from the evil rust fairies, but the lump under the bonnet was very resilient.

There is an online breaker somewhere that will try and source bits for you, it's all done with dialogue boxes n stuff so you don't have to get too involved with them. Can’t remember what it is called, but I will wager some clever surfer on here will know it.

And i thought this was going to be a piece of pi$$ too..!!!! spent most of the day scrabbling through scrap yards looking for a RWD donor car....scrapys have changed ...remember balancing 7 cars high whipping a petrol tank out a MK1 fiesta with a bolster and a club hammer !!! cause the bolts were so rusty !!! now all cars are laid out not stacked and range from about P reg onwards....feel really old now... and still no closer to finding a ford setup pinto/ crossflow can get a zetec no bother but rwd box and rear axle etc ...aaaarrrgggggg...

ebay is your friend.. my mate with the locosts has not got anything for his car from a scrap yard its all off ebay. He normally buys a Mk2 escort or a granada or something like that and spends the entire weekend stripping it to its components. Keeps the bits he wants and puts the rest back on ebay.

Or you could look for bike engines.... put throttlebodies on a blade engine and have fun :D

Having driven a Westy Megabusa (and nearly pooing myself) I can say I love big bike engines in light cars. The only trouble was I couldn’t find neutral very easily if I wasn’t paying attention. The push/pull lever for the sequential change was very confusing for my limited mental capacity.

Oh and pulling away took a bit of juggling the clutch, which was also bloody hard as you can imagine, especially if you had lost track of which gear you might be in:D

The Caterham that I liked was the blackbird based one - shame I didn't fit properly :( The Westfields fit me better. I know what you mean about the megabusa one, pulling away seemd to need a large amount of revs but once moving I loved it :D Just wish I had the talent to drive the wheels off it ;) Definitely fell in to the adequately rapid bracket  In the wet it was a best described as "playful" ;)

I guess it’s a flywheel and the lack of torques problem. The cars talents were wasted on me.:(
